I don't know about the order but here's eleven, and no I don't think Prince is in the top eleven.
Ray Charles (gotta put him in there, the guy INVENTED soul music) Sam Cooke Stevie Wonder Marvin Gaye Otis Redding James Brown Michael Jackson (11 year old version) Phillip Bailey (best falsetto hands down) Donny Hathaway Curtis Mayfield Sly Stone (probably a controversial choice, but he has such a versatile and idiosyncratic voice) People who may be unfairly overlooked in my list: David Ruffin, Jackie Wilson, Luther Vandross, Glen Goins, Ray Davies, Larry Graham, Prince And For the Ladies Aretha Franklin Mahalia Jackson (technically gospel, but I had to include her) Patti Labelle Mavis Staples Diana Ross Syreeta Wright (maybe more of a personal favorite than a top eleven choice, but sue me) Minnie Riperton Tammi Terrell The Raylettes (all of em were great)....can't think of any more sorry ladies | |
