Peter Gabriel

I'm just starting to get into Peter Gabriel's work - anyone else here into his music? What do you recommend?

My favorite CDs are OVO, Passion, and Security. Not the top 40 kind of music, but more ambient.

If you like world music, I suggest you subscribe to the Real World Notes magazine - Peter Gabriel's Real World record label puts out twice a year. They always include a track from Peter (usually something previously unavailable elsewhere) and about 9 - 11 cuts from other Real World artists. A great way to sample what's abvailable on Real World.

Also, they just remastered Peter's entire catalog so all his early records are newly available. My suggestion is to get the third record (known as 'Melt') with 'Biko' and 'Games Without Frontiers'. The whole record is perfect.

"SO" is a classic. Has a few of the big hit's on it - "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time". It's an excellent introduction because of this. Also, you get an idea of his vocal range and production skills. You get introduced to the PG world and people - Manu Katche, Daniel Lanoise, Kate Bush, Youssou N'dour, Stewart Copeland are all involved.
You'll listen to this album (now remastered) and have it spinning around in your head for months. When I ever I hear one of it's tracks, it always take's me back to whatever I was doing when i first listened to it. It's very evocative, cinematic.

For sheer originality, but more esoteric is album number 3 -"MELT" - this will never leave your CD player.

Actually, get everything, there arn't that many and it's all genius.

I wasn't very clear about the magazine - it's actually a small four color magazine that comes with a CD that has both audio tracks and quicktime video files on it.

Boy I'm scattered today. Start here: www.petergabriel.com. Real World Trading is where you order that subscription, but I just tried going there and it's down right now. Try again later if you're interested. Also there's a lot of info about Peter to check out.

How amazing! I just felt the mood to listen to him while I was logging on and now there is a topic on the ORG! One of my favorites is the live Secret World Double CD with Paula Cole singing back vox! I love Paula Cole, too. One Heck of a piano player and has a set of powerful lungs, too!

PETER GABRIEL- HE TALKS IN PICTURES NOT IN WORDS!

Just his vision alone makes him a musical giant. Every one of his CDs has a bit to offer & since recently having his CDs REMASTERED-(come on PRINCY!), now is a great time more than ever to add his mastery to your collection!. Take your pick, his 1st 3 cds poppy, quirky & artsy, #4-SO the further adventures +.

But IF you want to hear where it ALL began, TAKE A RISK , Blow your mind out & Check out these 6 early GENESIS cds.
TRESSPASS, NURSERY CHRYMES, FOXTROT,LIVE, SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND, & The VERY visionary -LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY!.- Like Prince's musical genius, here is another one!
ENJOY!
FUNKYFISH !

Thanks for all the suggestions. I bought the remastered Shaking The Tree yesterday as an introduction. Now I have that I may just buy them all in order, so I can trace his musical development.

Hey, and don't forget my girl Laurie Anderson, who duets on the song "Excellent Birds". There's another version of this song on Laurie's Mr. Heartbreak album, which is another duet version with Peter Gabriel...I think he appears in a few other tracks on that same album, as well. A fantastic collaboration...

I went to see a Genesis tribute band last night, called The Musical Box. They perform old Genesis shows complete with same set, costumes even the adlibs are the same.

The show they did last night was from "Selling England By The Pound" World Tour and it was absolutely fuckin awesome.

They usually tour Canada and the States so if there playing anywhere near you I urge everyone to go see them. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
Some people are like Slinkies...

They're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

The "Melting Face" album is probably the best one. A lot of people list "So", but by that point he had slicked up his sound a little too much. The "Scratching Fingernails" record is a fave also.

What the hell happened to this guy, anyway? Where'd he go?
