I don't know how to define rnb at all. We all know "real" rnb was people like ray charles, sam cooke etc..... Luther didn't do many uptempos did he? Though "any love" has a few funky numbers mind. I say luther is too limited for the title.

I think when the question was posed, I interpreted it as modern R&B. Sam Cooke is long gone; Luther is only recently departed. As with most modern R&B artists, Luther's uptempo songs took a backseat to his ballads. And yes, he had quite a few uptempo songs.
Stop To Love and Bad Boy come to mind immediately. Luther was a ballad king and as far as singing goes, R. Kelly couldn't even wipe Luther's ass vocally. In my opinion, neither can Prince. As a vocalist, Luther was far and above most other singers. I'm not saying this as a fond sentiment because he's dead. I've posted this before. I hope they release a good concert video so others can know as well.

And the uptempo "rub you the right way". Anyway, prince is too versitile. We all kow Prince mixes up white, latin and black influences. But I guess luther is really.

Brother Ray set the bar.
Luther added to it with quality and great taste. With great arranging from Marcus and Nat. Marvin, Stevie, Sam Cooke. Gladys Knight is the true Queen Of Soul. (Listen to her "Then And Now" she still sounds just as good. We'll give Bobby the Ike Turner Medal Of Freedom award at a later date. (Ike pawned it.) R Kelly should get the "Balls Big As Church Bells" award" for his lack of shame. I think his video is funny. The man is making serious publishing money from all this. Say what you want but he's is paid. Hell to tha yeah. If you notice in the "closet" video he has the same expression on his face when holding the gun as he did when he was lying on BET. When he went down on the chick all he had to do is face her the other way and it would have been like his sex tape. [Edited 7/11/05 18:58pm] [Edited 7/11/05 19:04pm]

Have you heard R Kelly's new album. It's a pile of shit. King of R N B? Him? Yeah, right! There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

ugh.... i can't even imagine anyone having the nerve in this era of laying claim to the title. or even who someone else would have the audicty to crown. the entire r&b landscape is stomach-turning at the moment. that includes so-called "neo-soul" (they had to come up with the name "neo-soul" to hype it and sell records so that no one would notice that it was so god damn boring.)
