Maybe check out CDnow.com for song samples if you aren't willing to purchase blind. My favorite album of hers is Peace Beyond Passion. However, all her albums are unique, fresh, uncomporomised and stirring. She is amazing live 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I've been waiting for this forever. The two downloaded tracks I've heard are amazing. Hopefully, tomorrow won't be as crazy at work as today and I can sneak out to Best Buy ~ IF they have it. She rocked the house in DC last night - but alot of people were a little upset because she didn't sing - she and her band were on some instrumental jazz type shit but it was so amazing just hearing them play - I was defintely excited!
and I fought my way through the crowd until I was at the very front - ooo was I in love!

It is but when you go to a show- ecspecially if your a fan - you go hoping that the artist will do at least some of the older stuff or the stuff you can sing along to (and she usually does) but she was strictly on the album last night -- so maybe I worded that wrong

HEY!!! Now that I can see the art in the initial post, I have a question and a complaint...
1) Why is this art different than the European version? I hope it wasn't changed due to any anti-Arabic sentiment in the U.S. 2) I think it bites that Meshell was not able to use the original band name, "Papillon," after Verve passed on distributing this project. It's good, though, to see the concept acknowledged with the butterfly on the U.S. release. Death to Verve!! (... or at least a really bad cold). [Edited 6/28/05 10:28am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I got it!
What a smart and courageous move for Meshell! The two things I love most about her -- her sultry voice and her sexually/politically charged lyrics -- are also the two things I've long feared might pigeonhole her as a one-trick pony. It was most apparent on her last album COMFORT WOMAN. As much as I loved that CD, I couldn't help but keep thinking, "Haven't we heard this before?" On her latest project, she leaves that familiar space for perhaps more sacred ground. Not a single word is uttered by her on this one, allowing us to concentrate on the arrangements, the improv and (dig her lack of ego) OTHER musicians! How unheard of is that?! This is one of her best. And it's better -- and somewhat less pretentious -- than N.E.W.S., by the way, IMO. [Edited 6/28/05 10:30am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

i am totally loving this album!!!!! however, deeeeep down inside, i miss her vocals, maybe i'm the only one feeling that....i dont think that should could match what cassandra, sabina or lalah did with those songs but i just feel like i'm cheating on meshell by listening to this album, and not hearing her voice...*( i know its a little mellow-dramatic, but hey i love her voice)

For sure it was for just that reason (anti-Arabic sentiment). It makes sense when after all it's a business and that's not the way to move this album.
2) I think it bites that Meshell was not able to use the original band name, "Papillon," after Verve passed on distributing this project. It's good, though, to see the concept acknowledged with the butterfly on the U.S. release. The Arabic alphabet is beautiful. Don't like what they did to it on this cover. The butterfly composition is so much better. Gonna get this one tomorrow. Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify
