Weather Report: Heavy Weather and Mysterious Traveller

I've been ridin' these two hard lately, from'74 and'77-- especially tracks like Nubian Sundance, American Tango, Mysterious Traveler, Birdland, Palladium, Harlequin, Teen Town and A Remark You Made---Ethereal Space Jazz/Funk/World sounds-- people just called it fusion, but there was really no way to pigeonhole it, then or now...Zawinul, Shorter and the crew -- bassists Alphonso Johnson, Miroslav Vitous, and, of course, Jaco Pastorius, Drummers Ishmael Wilburn, Leon Ndugu Chancelor and Alex Acuna, and percussionists Dom Um Romao, and Manolo Badrena -- anybody else diggin' these or any other WR titles?

Ehm yeah. smile

I acquired Weather Report as a part of my trip through the legacy of Jaco Pastorius, and this group
was the blueprint for the concept of the fusionband for years to come.

Though Zawinul's synthesizer-sounds are undoubtfully eminent, they thend to be really time-restricted, and
sound really dated, much like Miles Davis' eighties-bands. When I went to a concert by the Zawinul Syndicate
(his current touring-outlet) two years ago, he had assembled an amazing group of musicians to improvise with.
It struck me that all the musicians sounded really fresh and current, except Zawinul, who chose to stick
with his signature sounds a bit too much. During the concert, he credited his son with the programming of
his sounds, so that might be the problem.

Still, this is a top-notch group of musicians that produced utter relevant music in the jazz-scene
of the seventies.
