i'm not sure about that - i think he went through a really intense period in the the mid-to-late '90s, but the difference between him and what we'd consider "tortured artists" is that he pulled through without destroying himself or giving in to the pressures and tragedies around him. dude's a strong willed and healthy guy - i think a lot of the "tortured artists" that we think of are people who not only had hard lives, but also were kind of fragile souls to boot. i don't think of prince that way.

Anx, I knew u were going to chime in with something like that!

nod I agree with you BG Baby as always razz . I think more or less the point that you are trying to get across is that tortured artists like in P case are motivated through their expreinces and pressures to write their most powerful and intense pieces of music. For example in P case, when P was going through a lot drama in life, this is when he wrote the some of the best peices of music in his whole catalogue.

2pac was overrated to me, he only had dear mama and i get around. California dreamin was so stupid and only showed his ignorance of him and the whole west coast people. The bad thing about that horrible song is that Compton, inglewood, south central does not even look as close to what they claim it looks like. I be disappointed everytime i go out there, i be expecting to see gang members , people running with guns in there hands. 2 pac sucked to me and notorious big was way better than him.

Wow.

I think he was better than that.

I think he created an image for himself that consumed him. He didn't start out Thug Life. He invented it. He felt the pressure to become it. And he died because of it. IMHO, whatever issues he had either caused that or were caused by it.

Although some may say Jim Morrison was just an egotistical prick, I'd have to say he was tortured and I do adore the music of The Doors and his poetry.

Dare I say, but I do feel Prince falls into this category. Maybe not today, but, I belive there was a time. P has even gone on to say that the urge to make music sometimes is so strong that it's a curse.
Of course...he's tortured...
....everytime he turns his radio on and the R-Kelly song is on.

Really, it seems that the criteria here for "tortured" is one that either looks it, has a serious drug habit or dies young.

Prince comes across as very meticulous (doesn't have the "tortured" look) but that doesn't usually go hand in hand with his type of creativity. Just because you don't look it doesn't mean you're not.

That must be a torture in itself. I hope, at least, he's a slob at home. Candy wrappers and stuff....

Question when you say "tortured" do you mean self-destructive? We might define the word differently.

it was supposed to say " even more so if they create alone or even more for those that create alone"...sometimes the thoughts merge. I wish you weren't so critical of me...you're far from perfect, you know.

It was this...

"And one is not tortured simply because they "look the part". I would imagine that more artist than you would think are tortured in some way. Especially if they are critical of/hard on themselves. And even more so for they create alone."

...that "clicked" it for me. wink

And yes, i'm critical of myself.

So mature though. Artistically anyway. I can't believe the music of Joy Division was made by 22 and 23 year olds. omg
