The 80's!
Firstly:
I was a child and music was always in the air at home. I'm missing those years; and it's so moving for me when I hear such a lovely song that I've heard last time when I was a kid...
touched
Secondly:
Because those were "golden years" for some of my favourite artists:
Prince, Annie Lennox (Eurythmics), Kate Bush, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, U2, Grace Jones, Adam Ant, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Simple Minds...
cool

The 70s lol

I feel blessed to have grown up in that era. It's absurd how much mindblowing music there was during that decade.I was there during Stevie Wonder's creative streak....I was there during the exciting,fun-filled disco years....I was there during soul music's highest point...I was there during Elton John's heyday...I was there during funk's heyday, when bands like Earth Wind and Fire,Parliament,Funkadelic and the Commodores were kicking ass!

It was such a thrilling time to be alive!!! music

70s and 80s. The 80s for my childhood, but I think the 70s were a perfect balance between innocent and politically aware. Post-Vietnam, Pre-AIDS. And for Soul Junkies there's just no competition with the 70s.

70s - The Isleys were supreme then! biggrin Not just them, but there was a lot of great soul music then. In some ways, the soul/R&B of the 80s was more fun, but it was more inventive, progressive and complex in the 70s. I can't see how anybody can be a fan of these so-called neo-soul artists and not listen to the artists that inspired them.

Soul music in the 70s was just incredible.That was truly the most inspired era for R&B.The O'Jays,Curtis Mayfield,Stevie Wonder,Barry White,Millie Jackson,Minnie Riperton,Bill Withers,Al Green,Sly Stone,P-Funk,The Jackson Five,Earth Wind and Fire,The Commodores,Natalie Cole,Heatwave....soul music at it's highest point!

For me, it's the 80's without a doubt. I loved that there was so much variety to choose from and all of the genre's had someone who was TRUELY kicking ass in it. MTV was new and exciting and they played music. It was an event to see your favorite artist's new video debut and they made a big deal about that and not about 7 people trying to live in the same house together or who's room looks good enough for them to date eek .

I was born in 79 but I wish I had been alive throughout the rest of the 70's because I love so much of the music that came out of that decade, especially the stuff that came out post 1975. I believe that it was the best period for music. The stuff that was new in the 60's was made better and people experimented enough for it to carry into the 80's. I wish we still had even a little bit of that in the mainstream world but I'm glad I had the 80's.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

If forced to pick only one decade, I'm going to go with the 1970s. (sorry, 1960s and 1980s !)
Why? Here's why :
The Rolling Stones, the Who. Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Neil Young, Al Green, P-Funk, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell,Allman Brothers, Earth Wind & Fire, Lynryd Skynyrd, Isley Brothers,David Bowie, Spinners, O'Jays, Roxy Music, J Geils band, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen,Donny Hathaway, and later in the decade : The Clash, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Chic, Blondie, Television, and Prince.
You'll note that a lot of these acts, such as the Stones and Aretha, actually started in the 1960s, but I think they did their best work in the 1970s. Hell, even Elvis Presley made some of his best records in the 1970s !

And even the "junk" of that era is preferable to a lot of stuff out today. Check out Rhino Records' 25 CD one hit wonders collection, "Have a Nice Day" for some guilty pleasures

The 80's. I have too much music from teh 80's.

The synths, the drum programming, they werent scared to venture out in2 musical oblivion.

Today, the kids are calling Missy's Lose Control" "Unique" and "Different". Why that's jsut 80's ELECTRO. They don't know and havent known anything about experimentation and funky ass breakbeatin' jams. disbelief I wish more artists and producers would bring back them big snares and funky ass synths.

Great Topic!!! thumbs up!
My favorite decade is the 80's. I'm an 80's baby and I can remember a lot of music being played in my childhood during that time. I loved those synthesizers and computeristic sound of music back then. Especially the New Jack Swing era of R&B in the late 80's, nothing can beat that music that came out then...
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

The 70s and 80s. Childhood was the best time of my life. I miss those carefree days. True soulful music was still being made at that time as well.

Although I also appreciate music from all decades, there's no need to lie, it's the 60s heart for me.

The R&B of Motown, Stax, Atlantic, etc.
The Jazz on the radio.
The Gospel on the radio.
The British Invasion.
The beginnings of ROCK (not just Rock&Roll but ROCK!) on FM radio.

James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, The Supremes, The Rolling Stones, Curtis Mayfield, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and on and on.

Just a wide open time for music and where the foundation was laid for most of what you hear today that's considered Pop/Funk/R&B/Rock/Gospel.

And I didn't need the Internet to "look for good music".

All I needed was this...

...and a supply of 9-volt batteries.

Same here! In addition, my boombox also had a double cassette player so I can record the songs from the radio. biggrin

Pop - 80's

Rap - mid-80's thru early 90's(the Golden Age of Rap. Hasn't been the same since Biggie & Tupac left us).

Rock - 90's(Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam)

I was born in '85 so I wasn't there, but I have to say the 70's.
For one reason, Stevie's '72-'76 run of incredible albums. From all those 70's soul-giants he was the greatest, and most varied.
