Vocalist Esthero was born Jen-Bea Englishman on December 23, 1978, in Ontario, Canada. She moved to Toronto in 1996, and quickly became a fixture at the city's open mikes. There she met Doc (real name: Martin McKinney), an engineer and producer, and the two began working on a demo featuring his programming and her vocals. Sony eventually took interest, and suddenly Esthero went from a fledgling idea to a duo with Esthero's name as their own and a record, Breath from Another, issued in spring 1998 on the label's Work imprint. Breath's mix of beats, lush vocals, and fractured bits of programmed samples caught on perfectly with the trip-hop trend of the time, and Esthero had success with singles like Heaven Sent and the hip-hop-flavored title track.

However, it would take nearly seven years for a follow-up to appear. In the interim Esthero parted ways with Doc and struck out on her own, contributing vocals to projects like Black Eyed Peas' "Weekends" (2000). Signing with Reprise, she began work on new material, and returned officially in summer 2004 with the club single O.G. Bitch. Esthero followed the single in November of that year with We R in Need of a Musical Revolution, an EP that found her collaborating with Sean Lennon, Cee-Lo, and producer James Robertson (Skye Sweetnam) on a 21st century version of Breath's assemblage sound. The EP set up a full-length entitled Wikked Lil' Girls, which was slated for release in early 2005.

Wikked Li'l Grrrls is a decent CD, I'm still growing into it. For some reason, I can't help but think of Joi's "Star Kitty's Revenge" when I spin it.

My standouts include "We R In Need of a Musical ReVoLuTIoN*!" "Everyday Is A Holiday (With You) (feat. Sean Lennon)," "Bad Boy Clyde," "If Tha Mood (feat. Shakari Rite)," "Melancholy Melody" and the title track.

Cee-Lo, dat-da, edit.

I like her. She's like a grown up Gwen Steffani, devoid of fluff. Canadians kickin' our ass again! pissed For those looking to check her out, you're in luck. She just started her tour. Check http://www.esthero.net I'm not posting details and tour dates. She reminds me a little bit of Blu Cantrell vocally with a tad bit of Lina thrown in. Musical Revolution is pretty cool, and she's got some pretty decent others, too. If you're tired of the same ol' same old, she's definately worth a look. Speaking of Lina, if you like the jazzy vox thang, peep her new CD "The Inner Beauty Movement". Real nice.

nod It does sound like she biting Joi's sound. It's funny you should mention that b/c that's the first thing I'm thinking damn this sounds too familiar either its Joi or Blu Catrell.

I'd say more Blu than Joi. Joi gets downright funky and soulful on some of her tracks. Esthero sticks to the jazz thing. She wouldn't sing "Lick" like Joi does, although she's almost as dirty as Joi (almost, but not quite). You can tell that she has listened to Miss Badu as well in some of her songs.

I like Esthero a lot but I only have Breath From Another. I can't wait to pick up Wikked Lil Grrrls. She's one of the few artists whose voice I actually miss if I haven't played her in a while.

Maybe it's the Goodie Mob connection which makes me draw that parallel...

Esthero :: Cee-Lo >> Goodie Mob << Big Gipp :: Joi

I've listened to this album a few times now and can't hear a Blu Cantrell connection. Which song do you think sounds like one of hers?

Take away the music and "Hit em Up Style" and "O G Bitch" could pass as cousins, so to speak. Her voice is really far more similar to Gwen than Blu, though.

"Gone" is beautiful! The rest of the album is growing on me. So far I'd give it a solid 6 out of 10.
