I'm not even an extreme Madonna fan, but the woman is just a great all-around performer. She has NEVER been know for having a great voice, but for Madonna that really hasn't mattered. As far as whether Madonna' voice is better than Britney's, well at least Madonna has the courage enough to sing live with the situation warranted it. I don't think that Britney is capable of even attempting that at this point in her career. Britney NEEDS all of the dancers, etc., while Madonna really doesn't to be a dynamic performer all by herself.

With regards to solely her voice, though, I think she sounds best in a deep, low register. She sounds okay otherwise, but man, remember how lovely and clear her voice sounded in the "Evita" and "Ray Of Light" period? She's fallen downhill again in recent years, IMO. I remember when she performed "Hollywood" and "Like A Prayer" in 2003 on some MTV show and sounded awful.. and you can tell she was struggling, too, simply by her mouth expressions and crackly voice.

It's difficult for me to judge coz like I said, Madonna's performance was just great!! The higher notes have always been difficult for her. Have you ever seen her live performance of "Fever" on SNL??? I was just blown away by that performance. She just used minimal movements, stood there and sold it. It's one of my favorite Maddy performances and that song is pretty low.
