I don't know the meaning behind the pic but Luther was a huge wrestling fan. Apparently, he would stop recording sessions so that he could watch Wrestlemania. That's from what I saw on that special on Luther last night on BET. IMO, the picture fits. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I know that this has probably been said, but this is truly one of THE worst things that can happen in music.....when one of the BEST ones go..... I was really lookin for him to make a complete turnaround and even bring on another album, but indeed, God had a better plan for him. .....singin in the Heavenly Choir..... They did WHAT??!....

Upbeat songs. He made a real dent on the charts with "Stop To Love" and "Never Too Much" but for some reason, these upbeat numbers seemed all too rare. Vandross uptempo songs felt very pop but and he could have easily become a dance pop artist but he stuck with the soul. That being said, his upbeat songs were great and you could tell he made fun doing them! I agree that his uptempo songs like "Stop To Love" sound very poppish, (as most stuff by all artists of the late 1980s) but you should check out some of his earlier uptempo jams like "She's A Super Lady". The bass line on that song is pure funk. "She Loves Me Back" is another great one. His work with Change is undeniably funk. I'll definately check out more of his catalog, as I'm sure most others will. I meant to disrespect in calling his uptempo songs pop. The passion in his voice when he sings a song like "Give Me the Reason" and "Stop To Love" among others is mindblowing for a pop number. Donna should have hooked up with him on her self titled CD. I know that the article said he sang back up for her, but that is news to me. Maybe they were talking about "State Of Independence" where every major R&B and a few rock pop artists sang back up.

A lot of folks considered Reuben Stoddard his "heir apparent" during his run on American Idol. Now we'll see if that ends up being the case.
I love Reuben's voice, but I doubt he'll ever tap into our emotions the way Luther does... I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Agree with the Reuben Studdard comment.
Did anybody go to the store over this weekend to try to find a Luther CD or DVD? Walmart was sold out, not a single Luther item anywhere! Further testimony as to how much Luther was loved and respected by many people. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

It's hard to express how much this has upset me. Only now have I begun to accept that another one of my greatest inspirations is gone. I still have the music, but i wish I could thank him. It hurts that I never got a chance to thank him, just shake his hand or give him a hug.
I remember back in '86 going down to North Carolina with my mother and two sisters. We were vacationing at one of those beach houses in Nagshead. During the drive down there, my mom realized there was only one tape in the car: Give Me The Reason. We wore that thing out. Needless to say, I'd spend the next few days hummin' "See Me", "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "There's Nothing Better Than Love" and the whole rest of the album. I was hooked. All my friends back then were into New Edition and all the younger acts. Here I was 11 years old and listening to "Lufer". He was considered "old people's music". Try telling that to a kid who'd just been bitten by the songwriting bug. From that point on Luther was a part of my life. My mom would get heated that I listened to him so much. She felt that an 11-12 year old kid had no business listening to all these songs about love. What she didn't realize was that Luther had awakened a fire in me. He was the very first artist to inspire me to really go for it and write my own songs from the heart. Only a fellow artist, whether you're a dancer, painter or author truly knows what I'm talking about. Luther was that voice inside that said "you can do it, man. Don't hold back". My dad would support my habit by buying me the "Best Of" and "Power Of Love". There was no turning back then. Luther was the man! My musical tastes and subjects of inspiration have varied greatly over the years, but I've never lost an appreciation for Luther's pure voice. That thing was an instrument all its own. It has stayed with me through everything. I even sang "Because It's Really Love" at my now wife/then girlfriend's high school graduation party. Some guys I was in a group with at the time said that I would probably never top that performance. Heck, not only was I singin' to my woman, but it was a "Luther" song. You can't half-step on that! It was like a big kick in the chest when we all heard about Luther's stroke 2 years ago. I told myself he'd be fine, but you know how we all do sometimes. I was really just bracing myself. The tribute at the Grammys was alright and he was more than deserving of it. There may be more tributes, honors, posthumous awards and so on. BET replayed their walk of fame tribute to Luther yesterday. I could hardly watch it without frickin' losing it. Seeing that smile, that thumbs up that he liked to give. His sense of humor was great, and I'll always treasure the t.v. appearances of his that I've taped over the years. More importantly, I think I'll honor Luther and myself by striving all the more so to give my absolute best in everything. Not just art, but life. As the art and the life take turns imitating one another, I'll never forget Luther's lasting impression and influence on me. I apologize for the long post, but I just had to get all this out of my system. I've been a total goof these past few days. My whole weekend went pretty much like this.... I'm cool now. I can watch his old videos and DVDs and find comfort in knowing that one of the greatest voices of our time still lives on.
