PRINCE wanted Meshell Ndegeocello This may be old mews but I just went on her site...www.meshell.com
and under her bio, it said that Paisley Park recors(among others) was courting her but she went with Maverick records because it offered her artistic freedom. HMMMMM..now this is funny...Prince is all about artistic freedom but apparently from the statement on Meshell's board, Prince wasnt offering that to her....I do notice how Prince has tended to suffocated all the artist he produces and ESPECIALLY the ones that were on his Paisley Park label. Do you think Meshell would have been as prolific as she has been under Paisley?

What Prince are you talking about? Most of his satellite bands just were created to be an outlet for his own songs that did not fit his own image... They were molded and re-created, re-named and just had to yield to his weird schedules and wishes. Which man has the need to give his singer/girlfriends different name? Just to fit a weird fantasy he has about women, for starters. Also read St. Paul's remarks about working with Prince, although, I must admit, that was all ages ago. But back in the day, when Meshell was looking for a deal, he was still 'weird'.

You know thats what is so surprising to me...Prince is ALL about HIS artistic freedom YET has suffocated the artists on his label...I dont get it..I think a Prince/Meshell collabo would be awesome tho..

It's ironic that Maverick went belly up, and gave her trouble when she tried to release Dance of the Infidels..... I also saw her in an interview once saying how she dosen't like the "music biz" and would have been content to just be in the background and play in Prince's band... I'm glad she didn't... I agree that Prince would have stifled her.

In case you are interested, Meshell is no longer signed to Maverick. She is now officially signed to the 'Universal France Jazz' label. Her latest record the Jazz oriented project 'Spirit Music Jamia: Dance of the Infidel' was released on Universal France internationally, and in the USA under the Shanachie label.
Her next record is underway...and apparently sounding amazing as well. Of course all of this info and much much more can be found at http://www.freemyheart.com
