this should have been called the "even the Blacks don't care about the" bet awards. i mean for the love of GOD, could there have been any more absentee winners? no one who was anyone was there to accept their award. it was the lamest show ever. i missed the fugees, but other than omarion's lip synced performance, and stevie's what the fuss, there wasn't any reason to watch.

Bet, should stop right now. no one cared about their lame ass show.

it was comical to see everyone say..._____ couldn't be here tonight, so we accept this award on _____ behalf. i mean, u're nominated for an award, could u at least show the fuck up? shouldn't that be a prerequisite? if u're nominated, and don't show up, u don't win.

i was insane...

peace to luther...

one luv..

i betcha i am more hip to any funk than u are... if u watched the awards, all the cool people stayed home. o and that bad bad horrible tribute to rick-i beat women, abuse cocaine, and make one hell of a lisence plate-james, by teena - i wish i could sing, but my voice sounds like larry graham with his balls in a vice, and even mannie fresh couldn't revise my career- marie was just deplorable. rick james was good for about 5 minutes, and all teena will be remembered for is being his lil token white girl. he had a couple hits, but then spent his money snorting and abusing. let's see how long Prince's rap sheet is... hmmm.. and missy elliot, well i love her new album, but she looked like she was higher than a mother fucker when ciera brought her on stage with her. the people that were at the award show, were people who needed the exposer, who either had an album almost off the charts, a new one coming out soon, or as in tom cruise's case, another chance for overexposer. the highlight, were MIKE JONES, cos it's all about that ScrewMusic, what the fuck u know bout that? and u gets no points for watching mtv's lil documentary on it, then actin like u know somethin. and i think the best part, was when they rolled credits, or when stevie busted out his b boy stance. and u can't forget seeing toni braxton's private parts during her performance. as paris would say.. that was hot

Coon is a gooood name for u...U claim u know about funk-- its common knowledge that Rick wasnt a saint, but goddamn, the man was funky. Buy the album street dreams, then come back talkin that talk, coon.

But that "i make one hell of a license plate" quip was good-- i was laughing, coon.

You leaving out the best part of the whole damn show-- GLADYS!

And ... are you talking bout funk or crunk?
Ciara (as she herself spells it) was deplorable. She was very uninteresting, her songs are good and danceable, but her voice packs no punch, i'd rather watch her videos than watch her live show, which is boring at best.

Damn, you must don't think too highly of yourself to call yourself "COON"... lol Are you RABID??? You must be, 'cause you're on here spitting some nasty shit about Teena Marie when you don't know what the hell you're talking about... mad So, let me be your teacher so I can educate you on some Teena Marie history...Okay? Just a litte bit, though, and don't worry, I'll take it SLOW...'cause I know that it will take A while for a mine like yours to COMPREHEND all that she's done.....I don't want your brain to explode wink

First of all, Teena wasn't Rick James' little token white girl...She's fought loooong and HARD to get to where she's at, and SHE DID IT HER WAY...Teena has broken down color barriers for artists who came after her like Madonna, Chistina A, Nikka, Joss Stone, etc...She's paved the way for for woman in the music industry who want to take full control of their ART like Alicia Keys, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, just to name a few...When Teena came along you could count just on ONE hand the woman that were writers, producers, composers of their own songs, and there are very FEW today...But, Teena's still at the forefront of it all after 26 years & counting... You see, that's what you call LONGEVITY, my little naive friend...

Also, did you know that Teena set a precedent? Yes, a Congressional Bill was named in her honored called the "Brockert Initiative"...Brockert is her last name, but I bet you thought it was Marie...Did you also know that Teena Marie could have owned Motown if her lawsuit wasn't settled out of court? Yes, Berry Gordy's MOTOWN RECORDS...The judge told Berry Gordy & co. that slavery was abolished in 1865 and if that little girl (Teena) goes into court in three weeks she's going to OWN your company. That's just how bad it was...So, Motown settled out of court with Teena for an undisclosed amount of money and released her from her contract...Teena has said in an interview that she just couldn't bring Motown down because it meant too much to her as a monument for Black people all over the world and it was the first thing that Black people had that was like, "WOW! This is ours?" She said that she wasn't going to be the one to bring that down because it meant to must to her. And, when Teena said that she say she said it as a PEOPLE...as a BLACK WOMAN because that's what Motown meant to her...

I see that you're a fan of rap music, right? So, did you know that Teena was one of first people who brought attention to rap music that was mostly underground with her song, "Square Biz?" You don't know nothing about that do ya? Well, shhhh, let me let you hear on a little secret you probably have been rocking to one of her beats that she created....WHAT??? Yes, her catalog has been sample a lot by rappers like Ludacris, Jay Z, Puffy, Snoop, Fugees, Master P & many others...You've heard of them haven't ya?

You said that "Manny couldn't revive her career"....Let me tell you something, so you will be in the know...Teena was always touring and making money...Touring is where the money's at anyway, but she just wasn't on the charts...You see, Teena is one of the very few artists that can still tour without anything on the charts. How many of today's artists that you know out that that's going to have a career that spans over 26 years and can still demand sold out shows by singing their old hits? Maybe, Alicia Keys and John Legend will have that longevity, but there's very few... sad Getting back to Manny Fresh, he didn't do shit, but sent Teena Marie an Al Green sample. Teena wanted to work with him, but Manny told her that people were telling him "do not fuck with the legend"...MEANING DON'T CHANGE HER, JUST LET HER DO HER THANG..So, he sent her the track and she too CONTROL of the track and did what she had to do to it. Teena put the vocals on it, wrote the melody, wrote the lyrics, did ALL the backgrounds, put another guitar on it, mixed it, mastered it, and sent it back...That's what you call FULL CONTROL, huh? The result of that was "Still In Love", the first release off of "La Dona" which went to #1 on the Urban AC charts for 4 wks. You talk about "reviving". Hmmmm, let's see...After being away from the charts for 13 years and "La Dona" debuted at #6 on Billboard's Top 200 chart. Teena's never had an album that debut that high on that chart. It also debuted at #3 on Billboard's Hip-Hop & R&B and it stayed on that chart for weeks. "Still In Love" a # 1 hit & "A Rose by Any Other Name" a # 5 hit. She was nominated for a Grammy last year and "La Dona" has gone gold. I think that's pretty damn remarkable for a 49 year old woman competing against young girls half her age and she's been away from the charts for 13 years..., but that's just my opinion smile I would like to add that I'm really grateful to Cash Money Records for giving Teena another chance and I would be the first one up to the plate to give them their PROPS!!!

The last thing I want to say to you is that I'm glad that you're on here HATIN' on Teena's tearful-yet-rousing tribute to Rick James because that only let's me know that it had gotten to you...You just can't stand the fact that a white girl can FLO like that...can you? Well, she's just showin the folks that don't know, what we fans already knew...Teena's tribute to Rick garnered a lot of great reviews & it was one of the highlights of the BET Awards.

BTW, Aside from Rick's run-ins with the law, DA MAN WAS TRULY A LEGEND/GENIUS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY...& His LARGE CATALOG is going to have his children, Ty, Rick Jr & Tazman living the GOOD LIFE for very long time... wink

BTW, Aside from Rick's run-ins with the law, DA MAN WAS TRULY A LEGEND/GENIUS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY...& His LARGE CATALOG is going to have his children, Ty, Rick Jr & Tazman living the GOOD LIFE for very long time... wink

Sarai thanks for the info. I did not know about the Brockert Initiative. To me Teena will always be a legend, an innovator. She's hugely underrated and often overlooked. Teena Marie has never been nor will ever be Rick's 'lil token white girl'.

It's beyond me why Teena is getting more attention on this thread than the ultra glam spectacle of Miss Knowles? hmph!

I mean TM Ok... but B is fabulous!

blah blah bafuckinblah, teena is not a goddamn saint.. in fact, she is more like an "ain't". so what she did this and could have did that... shoulda woulda coulda. o and i do like rap, but let's see u have to credit blondie's rapture, and all of dolemite's skits, captain blowfly, and even johnny cash and some older country artists, with rap's eventual discovery. i mean, why not listen to a boy named sue or folsom prison blues and tell me it ain't a blue print for what rap was to become. o and i did forget to mention gladys knight. i will agree that she was the HIGHLIGHT of the night. for real no lie and no doubt. her voice still reigns perfection. as far as sayin rick was funky, that is true, give it to me baby is a kewl song, but when u can buy his albums in a .50 cent bin at the everything's a dollar store.. hmmm something is suspect. as far as teena goes, who really cares, Jill Jones started out with her and u don't see people gettin all defensive bout her. so teena has been tourin, well an artist has to make money. the only way they do is to tour, especially when no one.. don't get it twisted, no one, was interested is doing an album with her. then comes in ass-money records and that album they put out with her was like nails across a chalk board. so some people bought it.. some people like nails across a chalk board.

and u need to hold up. this place has a higher standard than the ole npgmc, at least here u're supposed to be able to express yo opinion without someone attackin u. so chill, u all think teena is kin to the virgin mary.. i think she's a gutter slut. let's just agree to disagree, cos u will never bring me to think otherwise. i didn't like her in the 80's, 90's or now, so it will never happen. sorry..
