New DVD Collections by Music Video Directors

Good news for those who are interested in compilations by specific directors in music videos (as I am), rather than a compilation by artist. From davisdvd.com:
_____

Directors Label
Palm Pictures' amazing Directors Label series returns on September 13th with four releases from acclaimed directors Anton Corbijn, Jonathan Glazer, Mark Romanek and Stephane Sednaoui, Launched in 2003, the series highlights the work of the filmmakers who have helped to redefine music videos, filmmaking and advertising over the last decade. Definitely pick these discs up. The original three releases, featuring the works of Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry, were on our year-end best-of list. For more, visit the official Directors Label website.

The Work of Director Anton Corbijn will include 26 music videos (including Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence," U2's One (Director's Cut) and Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box"), interviews and commentaries, MTV promos with Beck and Dave Grohl, the making of U2's "Electrical Storm," an excerpt from a film about Don van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart, Love Will Come Through (A home made video with Fran Healy), Depeche Mode's "It's No Good" tour projections, Palais Schaumberg's "Hockey" (Corbijn's first music video), "NotNa" Corbijn documentary, and a 52 page booklet with photographs and drawings.

The Work of Director Jonathon Glazer will include 8 music videos (including Radiohead's "Karma Police" and Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity"), interviews and commentaries, 11 commercial spots, excerpts from the films "Sexy Beast" and "Birth," and a 52 page booklet with photographs, sketches, storyboards and interviews.

The Work of Director Mark Romanek will include over 25 music videos (including Jay Z's "99 Problems" (Director's Cut), Madonna's "Bedtime Story" and Johnny Cash's "Hurt"), director and artist commentary tracks for all the videos, a brand new documentary, celebrity interviews, "Romanekian" (Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Robin Williams discuss Mark's work), the making-of "99 Problems" and a 52-page booklet.

The Work of Director Stephane Sednaoui will include 19 music videos (including Alanis Morissette's "Ironic," Garbage's "Queer" and a new director's cut of U2's "Discotheque"), interviews and commentaries, "Walk On The Wild Side" short film (inspired by Lou Reed's song), "Army of Me" animation (inspired by Bjork's song), "Acqua Natasa" short film, "Reve Reche" (Sednaoui's first short film attempt), footage from Sednaoui's presentation at New York University Film School and a 52 page booklet with photos, storyboards, sketches and comments.

Not my cup of tea, to be frank, but props for Anton Cobijn who has shot some of the most iconic photos in recent rock history.

I'm bummed that the Stephane Sednaoui set doesn't have Madonna's Fever video, but glad that it's got Youssou N’Dour & Neneh Cherry's - Seven Seconds video.

Janfandemonium aside, Romanek's a very solid, rich director. His work as a whole CAN rightfully encapsulate an entire digital video collection. All of his short films are timeless. You can watch them ten years from now and they still look and feel in vogue.

Indeed. Just like you can tell a Phil Spector tune when you hear it, you can spot a Romanek video when you see it. They have a rich, unique look that really is stunning.
