Damn right! I took current radio stations off my dial years ago. The only ones I listen to now are oldies stations and I be damned if Clear Channel doesn't own those too. Out of decades and thousands of old songs, they take a select few and play them 10 times a day. Brain control is what it is. They are going to make sure that people only hear the songs that they want them to hear.

Same here.I only listen to stations that play oldies.Or,I just play my own CDs.I don't even watch MTV or BET anymore.

I sometimes don't even listen to the oldies. . .because they play the SAME oldies all the time. And if you're gonna play anything offa "Songs In the Key of Life" QUIT playing the EDITED versions!!! Arrgh!! mad

I listen to AOL Radio at home, mostly the jazz stuff, and I'ma gonna get me some SATTELITE RADIO as soon as I get me some $$cheddar$$ cheese

Another thing missing is the handclaps. Where the hell are the handclaps? I don't even hear any fake handclaps in music anymore. These fools have totally taken anything associated with rhythm out of the music.

hmmm Actually, Vain Baby I've been wondering about that myself. When we were growing up, you couldn't hear a jam w/out the handclaps. Now, you barely hear decent rhythms that are now but just borrowed. So what up with this shit? Could it be a conspiracy against Funk? Hell, I think that I may have a topic idea2 for a new thread called the conspiracy against good Funk.

music made my REAL musicians
with REAL singers who had TALENT & A DISTINCTIVE STYLE
& that (for the most part) had REAL DRUMS!

I think I hate this the most about "today's r&b" - I RARELY hear
REAL DRUMS
it's almost always DRUM MACHINES..
I am SICK of that !

most of the best funk/r&b/soul musicians have their ancestral heritage in AFRICA, where THE DRUM was THE INSTRUMENT..
& today it's.. it's.. those damned drum machines !

PATHETIC BEYOND WORDS.

I have to agree. I find myself listening to the drum beat and now recognize the drum machines.. you know how... the beat HAS NO SOUL. Just the same old, 1,2, 1, 2. Nothing new or original to catch your attention... drum machines just "keep the beat".
A real drummer will coax you to march to his beat.
cool

I think Mary J.Blige's last album was produced by P.Diddy (!).

Don't even get me started on her ass. I never could stand her from day one. I call her the "Rich Little of the Music Business" because not only does she remake songs, she tries to immitate the original singer's voice as much as possible. Also, the music she's singing over sounds like the original record sampled in the background over a weak hip hop beat. If you didn't listen closely, you would think the original artist went in the studio and remixed their old song to fit in with modern times.

SEE?? This is why I love you Vain!! You are inside my head. I CAN'T STAND MARY J!!!
I used to hear my favorite Chaka Khan song come on... Oh wait!! SHYT, it is that dayum Mary J with her weak azz voice trying to sing like Chaka KHAN!!
Not trying to take away from Mary J., I like her ORIGINAL songs like "Not going a cry no more" but she should not remake someone else's song unless you are going to do it better, or different. Better like Aretha's Respect... different like Dana Owens remake of California Dreaming

I agree that mainstream music is not as interesting as it used to be, but I think we should own some of that responsibilty as consumers and lovers of great music. We have a real duty to support local musicians, purchase music that we love and get the word out to others about the music that we truely appreciate. Mainstream music hasnt improved in part because many of us have sat on the sidelines and bitched and moaned while our airwaves were taken hostage by a select group of media conglomerates. Sure, we get older and our tastes become a little more conservative but we cannot have a cantankerous attitude toward what youth appreciate. I dont see where that helps anything. What does help is becomming more involved in the artform and putting your money where your mouth is.

Many people on this site always say "there is some good new music out there, you just have to look hard to find it".But back in the day,the good music was the mainstream music. You didn't have to look hard to find it.Compile a list of the top pop songs from 1983,and you will see that most of it was great.I think it's a shame that, whatever good music is out there nowadays, doesn't get the attention/sales/airplay that it deserves.Instead, crap like 50 Cent dominates the airwaves.

anyone else find it ironic that this is being said on a site dedicated to the guy responsible for turning the drum machine into the primary instrument used in r&b? confuse

It's no secret that Prince has used drum machines in alot of his early work. But more often than not,he uses REAL instruments.Hell,in the late 80s,he was using horns at a time when other artists and bands were obsessed with chessy synthesizers.

Also, Prince's drum machines in his early work sounded way different than the ones these clowns use today. Prince's drum machines beat hard and powerful without drowning out the song. Today's clowns' drum machines are either barely tapping or they are beating to the extreme to the point that they drown out the song.

Today's drum machines today sound nothing like Prince's. I can't explain it, they just don't sound right. Of course, they are made to sound like hip hop so that's probably my biggest turnoff with them. Prince's drum machines sounded very futuristic and were the furthest thing sounding from hip hop.

FUCKIN' RIGHT, vainandy!
Prince must be given credit for using those Linn drum machines..
as you said, they accentuated his music,
made him have a more unique sound..
which of course, within 4 years ALMOST EVERYBODY - from "(not really) ready for the world" to Phil "nasal pop star #1" Collins - was copying..

to me, the fact that so many of today's "r&b" performers ("musician" would NOT apply to most of them) USE drum machines is part of that whole "we gotta sound like everybody else, we have to go for that 1 quick BIG hit, & we ain't really trying to have a REAL drum beat/sound on our record"..

sad,
sad
SAD.
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Yes, today's music DOES suck, but that's partly because the world has become a much smaller place due to the internet and commercial radio networks. Music used to be regionalized back in the day so there were different things going on in different parts of the country and not everyone heard the same music on the radio so you were more apt to get different sounds.

Another reason is because artists aren't allowed time to grow these days. Think about it, it took guys like Prince, Bruce Springsteen, The Police, etc. at least 2 or 3 albums before they really hit it big. Now, if you dont' have a hit right out of the gate, your ass gets dropped, and if you dont get dropped, your second album gets little to no promotion. It's become the "Business of Music" as opposed to the "Music Business." What's the difference? In the latter, MUSIC comes first!

i just turned 26 and think that music right now is absolute shit. age has nothing to do with it. i doubt if anyone who's out right now will last for the next 5 years, at least musically. i'm sure they'll still be the demi gods of celebrity that socitey has turned them into, but still performing music? i think not. and i've felt this way, with the exception of a very very very very very very few (like radiohead) since the beginning of my freshman year of college. i dunno, i keep exspecting some new band w/a new sound or a revamp of the old sound w/a new flavor to save the day and it just hasn't happened. things are worse than i ever remember them being.

It´s the music that is shit today.
