Teena over Mariah out of seniority, melisma, musicianship and downright jam-ness.

Teena has the greatest voice I've ever heard. Her control is unbelievable. I STILL bang her song "Sunny Skies."
Silent shouts, I hope you hear
I'm calling out to your body
Baby, you know just what to do
Close the door, no interlude

Mariah Carey (and other "singers") have gotten bashed around and accused of...

warbling
hollering
screaming
screeching

being melismatic
(with the term being used as if this musical technique was something negative in and of itself)

...the same arguments one could use against Teena Marie.

Interesting that you make this comment, because I've noticed the very same thing. Though I'm really picky with her ballads, I love Lady T's dance/funk numbers. But to me, I dunno, her voice is just weird. It's crazy and all over the place, but people seem nuts about it. Something about her voice, particularly in her ballads, seems very contrived.

Overall, I think she's a force to be dealt with, and she's a very good songwriter and producer (she really proved her worthiness when she started producing her tunes without Rick's help).

This is no contest. Teena by a million miles. Teena can blow. Like Chaka and Jill Jones, Teena has a STRONG voice. Teena can blow without having to go into all of these higer registers. Her natural range has a great tone, as to Mariah's, her natural range to me, is strained. Teena KNOWS how to sing, meaning she knows what she can and can NOT do. Mariah sounds as if she's just out there, with no supervision, like perhaps a young girl who's been told by all of her relatives that she can sing, so she's just WAILING with out she's got.

I listen to both artist muisc before I answer because I wanted to be fair. Without a doubt it's Tenna nothing that Mariah sings touch me like Tenna, what I love about is her versatility she can go from funk to a slow jam and you can just hear the sincerity in her voice listen to her remake of Brenda Holloway "Every little bit hurts" the women got SOUL

Brenda Holloway herself is very underrated.

You hit the nail right on the head as to my sentiments. But as you've said, people dig it. Which is cool.

My question was supposed to make people answer based on vocal performance and not material but I don't think I changed it in time or made that clear enough. I'm not real fond of Mariah's last few releases myself.

I'd prefer to see her be a straight R&B singer (with good material) rather than incorporating the hip-hop elements she seems to feel obligated to do.

And then there's the question of whether she still even has the quality of voice she once had.

Teena, although I find her voice a little "off" sometimes and whiny....but she's got a more interesting overall sound and artistry than Mariah. I'm wondering about "The Emancipation of Mimi" though....I've never been a Mariah fan really, but I hear this one has some funkiness to it?

Teena Marie. every time.

MAYBE the argument could be made that at 1 point Mariah had a "better voice"..
even if this were true,
Teena has consistently done more with her voice
& she's definitely had better music
that was.. LESS "calculated".
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..
