I hear you, i also think it's amazing how a man with such a small amount of recorded material can be so influential over an entire century of music.

John Lee Hooker (the best of all imo)
Howlin Wolf Muddy Waters Johnny 'Guitar' Watson (the man!) RL Burnside Son House Lightnin' Hopkins Junior Kimbrough Sorry, but R. Johnson is good, but so over-rated. And to add blues rock just for fun - Jimi, and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, who in a way is so under-rated as a player.

Lightin' Hopkins
Buddy Guy - My alltime fave. Robert Cray Jimi Hendrix...when he played the blues. Roy Buchannan - not really a blues player, but he knew how to get down on the blues. Lonnie Brooks Otis Rush

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Blind Willie McTell, yet. It's a jungle out there.

Stevie Ray Vaughan is my all-time favorite. Most of the others tha I like have already been mentioned. I'm not sure if you would call her "blues," but Marcia Ball is great. Billie Holliday is not really "blues," per se, but she has a quality about her. Also, Los Lobos( maybe more rock), The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmy Vaughan, Johnny Lang. Taj Mahal.. I'm trying to think of some more...
Another person who hasn't been mentioned coz he is not known as much for "blues," I guess, is Eric Clapton. He has always revered blues artists. He was a huge fan of Stevie Ray's. His Me and Mr. Johnson cd was really good.

In order to play or sing the Blues, you got to feel and live it. Now, if you haven't done neither, than regardless of your race, you won't be able to give the Blues any justice and its the same with any other music form.

Since high school, my favorite bluesman has always been and always will be Robert Johnson. His guitar was amazing. To this day, whenever I listen to him, I'm still not convinced that he wasn't playing two guitars at once!

I didn't think Robert Johnson was playing the guitar through the Karate Kid's fingers. I was staying within the context of the movie. But it was some amazing playing for sure!
