I feel terrible ... (Stevie and Miles)

Orgers,

eye just finished reading the "Favorite Stevie Wonder song" thread, and eye realized how pathetic eye am sad At 22 years old, eye have only heard of FOUR of Stevie's songs!

eye Just Called 2 Say eye Love U
Part-Time Lover
Superstition
Isn't She Lovely

eye feel SO terrible!!! After seeing all the love given 2 Stevie on that thread, eye think its pathetic that eye've had so little xposure 2 him.

And eye feel the same about Miles Davis. eye have heard NONE of Miles' stuff; didn't even know who he was until eye heard Prince talk about him in interviews from the late '90's!!! sad Until '98, eye hadn't even listened 2 JAZZ, then eye got involved in a jazz choir when eye moved 2 Montana 4 my senior year of high school and developed an appreciation 4 it. When TRC came out, it got me really digging jazz, and so eye'm disgusted 2 say that eye know next 2 nothing about Miles, who is one of the masters of that genre. sad

Orgers, help me out! Peep me 2 the wonders of these 2 great artists! eye feel like eye'm not worthy of u guys.

It's never too late to go buy yourself some Stevie CDs... I'm not a huge Miles fan myself, (respect & props but not my 1st choice to listen to), but Stevie Wonder is truly amazing. 2 of the songs you list are far from his best. (You listed a couple good ones, too though!)

It's no secret his 70s work was the peak with the usual favourite albums being:

Songs In The Key Of Life
Talking Book
Innervisions

Secondary:

Fulfillingness First Finale
Hotter Than July
Music Of My Mind

As for Miles just start nice and easy with "Kind Of Blue", he has a MASSIVE, consistent output of jazz albums.

Don't feel bad. You're only 22. A lot of people aren't up on music that they discover years later was there all the time.

Essence gave you some good pointers on Stevie and Miles, but when dealing with Miles you're dealing with an output of many different stylistic explorations throughout his career (sounds like someone else, huh?). If you don't like one, two, three, or even four of his albums you still may find something in his catalog you like, and his career spanned over 40 years. I'm still currently enamored with the Jack Johnson album.

With both Stevie and Miles there's a ton to choose from, so you may want to listen to some clips online, or at a listening station in a music store if you can.

Dig in!

love4oneanother,

my fave is a newer song of his(mid 1990's?)--"For Your Love" from Conversation Peace. The album's ok, but there are a few gems on there.
I forget about the song once in a while and it somehow finds me, out of nowhere on one of my tape mixes, beautiful.

you will play his 70's albums out. They are amazing, I'm actually a little tired of them now because I have played them so much since I was real young. Now I listen to the songs I didn't used to like as much. He was so good, but sort of went the way of Prince- still better than most, but not near his own standard he set for himself.

Cool. I love the whole KOB album, but my favorite track is "All Blues"...sweeeeet.

For the record, my top 3 Stevie albums are:

1. Innervisions
2. Talking Book
3. Songs In The Key of Life

You can't go wrong with any of them. Or most of his 70s output for that matter.

If you really want a great overview of Stevie's career, may I suggest you get the 4-CD box set "At The Close Of A Century"? It was released a few years back.It contains songs from each phase of his career....

***Disc One---concentrates on his 60s work.Includes Motown classics like "I Was Made To Love Her" and "Signed,Sealed,Delivered".

***Disc Two---this is where the REAL fun begins.Contains songs from his early 70s albums, including 8 songs(!) from his best album 'Innervisons'!!

***Disc Three---Contains 9 songs from his landmark 'Songs In The Key Of Life' album (that's the album that we orgers can't stop talking about...lol...).This CD then introduces you to his first album of the 80s,'Hotter Than July'.

***Disc Four---This CD concentrates mainly on his 80s work, with a few 90s tracks thrown in for good measure.Highlights include "These Three Words","That Girl" and "You Will Know".

There is also an excellent,well-written booklet with rare photos, extensive discography, and commentary from Stevie himself. This box set is a great place to get familiar with Stevie's music, and you will undoubtedly wanna investigate the individual albums after listening to this set.

if you liked TRC, then best place to start with miles is his seventies period. in a silent way, bitches brew, agartha, on the corner. but jack johnson, kind of blue, etc are his more universally acclaimed ones. only because theyre more traditional jazz and not 'electric' sounding. but TRC sounds influenced by electric miles the most.
