Your latest Cds....

Hey all,

After some deliberating, I decided to pick up the BEP's "Monkey Business" today on the strength of the "Don't Phunk With My Heart" single.

Not bad...a *** album.

They should have made it a 12 track album, stopping at track 10 and adding the later songs "Union" (with Sting) and "Do What You Want" (bonus track).

I doubt many of you like the BEPs now that they have supposedly "sold out" but in case some of you do, what do you think of this album and Elephunk?. I have to agree there IS a bit of a sell-out facotr...the filler tracks towards the end of Monkey Business certainly make you think that, but this album does make me want to dip back into their catalogue and maybe get Elephunk too as I have been a fan since they started.

I also bought the new White Stripes, "Get Behind Me Satan".

I've only heard half of it so far, but I am already in love.

This album is grass-roots American music, but at the same time it is very experimental and ALL White Stripes. Some people have dissed their new direction, but I think it is inspiring what they have done with just two musicians.

thumbs up!

So what are your latest purchases?

.

I like "Monkey Business". It's a fun listen, if a bit uneven. There's a little 2 much effort on BEP's part 2 be all things 2 all fans, but I enjoy the fun of it. "Elephunk" was a great party album. There was very little about that record I didn't love.

I also bought Nikka Costa's "Cantneverdidnothin". She has many fans on this forum and it's very easy 2 see and hear why.

Finally, I also bought Garbage's "Bleed Like Me" recently. I run hot and cold with them and a lot of this album sounds the same, but there's a few good tracks.

I picked up five albums last Friday:

The Pooh Sticks – Million Seller

I’d avoided this band for years because the name just seemed way too tacky. My mistake, because this is pure bubblegum pop in the best possible sense – melodies that will be indelibly stamped into your memory the moment you hear them, big sparkling choruses, masses of acoustic guitars coupled with soaring electric leads. At least five songs here are pure pop heaven. My favorite so far is Rainbow Rider – it could have been taken straight out of an Up With People show, and had me reaching for the repeat button three times the first time I listened to the album.

Ivy – Apartment Life

Classically melodic mix of St. Etienne-style mod influences, Stereolab-tinged exotica and indie-rock. Very strong songwriting as well – Adam Schlesinger from this band does double-time in Fountains of Wayne, and he does know his way around a song.

Eric Matthews – It’s Heavy in Here and The Lateness of the Hour

Mid-nineties orchestral/chamber rock – loads of string and horn sections and heavy overtones of Love’s Forever Changes and Nick Drake’s records. It’s Heavy in Here seems a little too long on atmosphere and short on memorable songs – or at least nothing’s really sunk in yet, but The Lateness of the Hour is chock-full of instantly likeable tracks.

And I also picked up the new Mercury Rev – I hadn’t really planned on buying this because I kinda fell out of love with this band with the last album, but it sounds incredibly good so far.

OK, so on Sunday I was strolling through Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and I came upon a yard sale. This nice english woman was selling an assload of cassettes and CD's. She also noticed my Gang of Four T-shirt and told me that she was at the recent concert too. So we went into this long discussion about British music. But anyways, here's what I bought:

I'm kinda curious about this one - I used to really like the second half of Dog Man Star. Had a chance to listen to it? Any opinions if so?

Thanks, NWF. I was at the store and I couldn't pass this one up. I love "Don't Talk To Me About Love" and when I saw the tracklisting for this disc I had to have it. Totally worth it for the extended versions of DTTMAL, "Love To Stay," and "Bring Me Closer." Plus, "Stand So Quiet" and "I Don't Want To Know" are wonderful album cuts. Great, great record. So melodic. Clare's voice is like a sexy child (you know it's beautiful, but then there's a forbidden/taboo element to it).
