Old School Song of the Day - Your Precious Love ...Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell What a great song and performance from these two. And the bridge, the bridge. It's like a good desert after a great meal. It is a great song. Good choice. People may think I'm crazy, but, I feel Marvin was at his happiest when he was singing with Tammi. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Not to spoil the "biggin up Marvin and Tammy" vibe, but did y'all hear D'angelo and Badu's 1996 cover of it?

This song is sexy. They are my fav. duet partners of all time, perfectly matched, perfectly tempered. Love the strings deep down in the mix. Motown always knew how to do that just right.
And tA, that ain't a bridge, that is the most delicate of Victorian arches. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

I agree w/ you B about Marvin being his happiest w/ Tammi. I heard Marvin lost his mind when he found out she was dead. They had so much chemistry together on wax. I'ts kind of sad they never got together.

Yeah, Marvin went into seclusion for almost a year. Then decided to make "What's Going On". I don't think he was ever the same after Tammi's death. We'll never know, but she was probably the love of his life, albeit an unattainable one.

Hell I might as well give it up to make a point.
I heard this song on the radio coming to work this morning. This thing is great all the way from the very sensuous intro. When it reaches that "most delicate of Victorian arches" and Marvin sings, "To find a love like yours is rare these days", the eyes watered up . Not only because the melodic movement was so beautiful but the way it was sung was so sincere. I actually believed that he meant what he was singing. Another element I find missing today (sincerity). Props must also go to Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson for writing such a great tune. (and the majority of the other popular Marvin & Tammi duets) *lyric correction edit tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm [Edited 6/21/05 22:29pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. When it reaches that "most delicate of Victorian arches" and Marvin sings, "To find a love like ours is rare these days", the eyes watered up . Not only because the melodic movement was so beautiful but the way it was sung was so sincere. I actually believed that he meant what he was singing. Another element I find missing today (sincerity). I feel you. They sound completely in love on all their duets, which is one reason why they could elevate even a blasé song (ex. Something Stupid) to a minor classic. My other fav. slow jam of theirs is If This World Were Mine. And it's hard to beat Tammi's first verse on Ain't No Mountain High Enough (If you neeeeed me, calllll me.....) in terms of sex appeal. Diana Ross' version is HORRIBLE compared to the original. [Edited 6/21/05 17:11pm]

Diana Ross' version is HORRIBLE compared to the original. An interesting discovery concerning this song. On Sunday I made a trip to the store to get a Louis Armstrong CD that I needed. While roaming the aisles I decided to treat myself (Father's Day and all) to a few discs. One of the discs was an impulse buy on my way out of the store... ...Motown Classics: Gold a comp released this year (needed some Motown for the car). Since I was listening to another CD on the way home, I didn't open this one until just now. Lo and behold on Disc 2, it's got Your Precious Love on it. (I almost picked a different comp because it had Ain't No Mountain High Enough on it. Next time.) So here I am listening to it for about the 10th time. It's really a good comp... Disc 1 Money (That's What I Want) - Barrett Strong Shop Around - The Miracles Please Mister Postman - The Marvelettes Do You Love Me - The Contours You Beat Me To The Punch - Mary Wells Fingertips Part 2 - Little Stevie Wonder Heat Wave, (Love Is Like A) - Martha Reeves & The Vandellas My Guy - Mary Wells Where Did Our Love Go - The Supremes Dancing In The Streets - Martha Reeves & The Vandellas How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) - Marvin Gaye My Girl - The Temptations Shotgun - Jr. Walker & The All Stars Stop! In The Name Of Love - The Supremes I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) - The Four Tops The Tracks Of My Tears - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Uptight (Everything's Alright) - Stevie Wonder Going To A Go-Go - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Ain't Too Proud To Beg - The Temptations What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted - Jimmy Ruffin Disc 2 You Can't Hurry Love - The Supremes Reach Out I'll Be There - The Four Tops Jimmy Mack - Martha Reeves & The Vandellas Your Precious Love - Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Gladys Knight & The Pips I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me) - David Ruffin I Can't Get Next To You - The Temptations I Want You Back - The Jackson 5 Someday We'll Be Together - Diana Ross & The Supremes Up The Ladder To The Roof - The Supremes Ball Of Confusion (That's What The World Is Today) - The Temptations Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours - Stevie Wonder It's A Shame - The Spinners War - Edwin Starr Tears Of A Clown - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles What's Going On? - Marvin Gaye Smiling Faces Sometimes - Undisputed Truth Papa Was A Rollin' Stone - The Temptations Neither One Of Us - Gladys Knight & The Pips It's interesting how they sequenced Marvin and Gladys Knight's version of Grapvine back to back. This post also allows me to correct the lyric on that "most delicate of Victorian arches" here also. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. That's my all time favorite song from the Marvin and Tammi period, and yeah, y'all are right....That Arch.... .....
ya gotta respect The Arch!!.... actually, I really like D'angelo and Badu's version, too! It's a nice balance, they respect the original arrangement, adding just enough of their own vocal styles to put their spin on it... Oddly enough, though, the version that Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford did back in '83 (on Casino Lights) kinda left me cold...not sure why. I think it lost something in the musical arrangement.... ... Thank you!!! I tried to tell Rip that a while back and he wasn't havin' it. I knew you would bring that shit up! I used to not like any version of that song. And now I like them both for very different reasons. Like I said before, Marvin and Tammi sang it better, but I appreciate the drama Miss Ross brought to it.
