What Is The Best Teena Marie Compilation? I've been listening to her exotic Portuguese Love tune on the radio almost everday on those old-school stations and I have just fallen in love with her. I don't know which compilation I should really start with because there are just so many of them. Can anyone recommend one? Check me out and add me on:

This compilation is my favorite. It was released in 1994.Contains only the music from her Motown years (1977-1981),so you won't find stuff like "Lovergirl","Out On A Limb" and "Ooh La La La" (those are from her Epic years). But,you will find all the best songs from her Motown albums, including full-length versions of "Behind The Groove","Square Biz","Portugese Love","I Need Your Lovin" and many others. There's even a few previously unreleased outtakes.

Here's the track list to that comp: 1. I Need Your Lovin' 2. Behind The Groove 3. Every Little Bit Hurts 4. Irons In The Fire 5. Portuguese Love 6. It Must Be Magic 7. Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before) 8. Don't Turn Your Back On Me 9. Square Biz 10. Turnin' Me On 11. Now That I Have You 12. I'm A Sucker For Your Love Pretty good but some of her best songs weren't singles (You Make Love Like Springtime, Yes Indeed, Have My Cake & Eat It Too, Tune In Tomorrow, 365).

I agree with that. I bought the Motown one posted above and another one with just the Epic tracks and a few 12" singles in addition to that, then made my own 90 minute comp.

Wild and Peacful and Lady T are the only two Teena Marie albums currently out of print, and the only two that I don't own. They can be found on ebay, though too expensive for me.

I haven't seen those anywhere. Both of these are currently on CD in the record store up the street from my house. "It Must Be Magic" is the remastered version and also includes bonus tracks like the instrumental version of "Square Biz" and a really great live version of "Deja Vu" with Teena Marie and The Stone City Band from 1981. Your local record store can probably order these two CDs for you. . [Edited 6/27/05 10:25am] Andy is a four letter word.

What about this one? This seems pretty excellent. Does anyone have this collection? Check me out and add me on:

It was probably Tune In Tomorrow (from Irons In the Fire) or I'm Gonna Have My Cake (& Eat It Too, from Wild & Peaceful) - both are jazzy & amazing

She has a lot of sets out there and they are mostly either Sony or Motown (definately a lot more Motown sets out there). Most notably that one is missing "Oh La La La", which it mentions in the liner notes!

I will go on a limb here and say that I am the biggest Teena fan here... I have every album and 12 inch she ever released... If you can be more specific about the jazzy song your looking for, I can help you, because there are jazzy songs on all three of her first albums...(And thereafter).... I also agree with some of the earlier post to avoid all compilation cd's. They almost always either edit the songs, or leave out some gems..... The one exception is that I need your lovin' best of because it does have two previously unreleased songs, but concentrate on the originals first.

At this point,I think Motown and Epic should get together and compile a kickass 2-CD Teena Marie Anthology that includes all of her great songs from the Motown albums and the Epic albums. They could even include her most recent hit "Still In Love" at the end.I'd certainly go out and buy a compilation like that.

It's very surprising that they haven't. Usaually what happens is that mutli-label comps are from one label and that is the problem with Teena. Her hits are are rather evenly divivded between both companies. I'm sure Sony wants to do it and I'm sure Motown (actually, it's much more likey that it would be Motownm the rehash masters as more likely to do a two disc thing) wants to do it I'm sure the label who actually releases it would see the majority of the profits, so they won't budge.
