Led zeppelin and live aid.

I just saw a doc on bbc2 about the day.

Phils collins played with them (WTF?) in america. Led banned the rights of the fottage for tv or the dvd release and blamed drummer phil for the event.

No offence led, but ur a wee bit arrogent. I've sene bob dylans footage, and that was shit, but he still didn't care enough to block it!

Anyone know the story?

Iam sure minni knows?

Phil also said when he first entered their trailer, just getting off the concord from england, jimmy immediately said "you know ur parts to Stairway to heaven?". He wasn't joking neutral Shame and sad.

I thought you were going to say they were reforming for Live 8 w/ Dave Grohl for some strange reason...dreams are free I guess!!

They didn't allow the rights for their footage to be given for the Live Aid DVD, but it seems like Prince didn't allow the rights to the '4 the tears in your eyes' video either. Led Zep did say they would give profits from a future dvd release, so fair enough. Comparing to Dylan allowing to use his footage is maybe unfair. He's allowed alot of crap to be released during his career (and I LOVE Dylan).

Yeah I like some dylan. His preformance though neutral I would just like to see how bad led were. They obviously really care about their legacy if this perfomance slips out. Iam sure the fans still would like to see it.

Lashing out at phil (and it was bad) was unfair too. Phil and the zep has to be one of the oddest parings for a perfomance ever! lol

Oh God I remember watching it and thinking WTF?!? Apparently they rehearsed a whole bunch of songs which sounded great and then he decided to completely different songs for the performance razz How very Dylan lol

Did Zep really blame Phil? I'm actually kinda curious to see it now. Yeah, they're a bit precious but they can afford to be I guess.

WOW, u were at USA live aid?

It sucked that a total lack of black perfomers were there (was stevie there?)

The doc only showed some pics of the perfomance, saying how led zep bought the rights. Couldn't of come cheap.

Phil said it wern't too good, and thought aobut walking off stage during the performance. I aint no led fan, but thast dohnt sound too good.

Said plant was off.

Believe me, most fans have seen this video/performance. Just because it's not on the DVD doesn't mean it hasn't been circulating forever from broadcast tapes. The performance isn't so bad as they would have you believe, though it's definitely very raw. They had rehearsed with Tony Thompson, and Phil weasled his way into sitting in without bothering to attend rehearsal (playing drums for a Plant solo tour is not the same as playing for Zep, Phil!). Phil did suck ass in a very obvious way, with Whole Lotta Love getting the worst of it. Tony Thompson held it down though, shooting Phil death looks the entire time. The best part is when they go to an overhead camera angle and you can see the whole band on Tony's side of the stage, showing where the true center was. But the performance wasn't so bad that it shouldn't have been released. Jimmy Page in particular is very controlling though over what gets released under the Zeppelin name, and won't let out anything live that he doesn't consider perfect. And there must not be much on that level for him since The Song Remains The Same, Live at the BBC, and How the West Was Won are all edited to sound the way they do!! But some of the common lines they've used to shoot this one (Live Aid) down are: Plant was in the middle of his solo tour at the time and his voice was shot; the roadie handed Page his guitar fresh from the case without checking the tuning... and of course Phil sounded like complete shit.

But really, it's not so bad. The best of any of their "reunions" so far (Live Aid, Atlantic Records 40th, R'n'R Hall of Fame) definitely. They should have lightened the fuck up and let it out on the Live Aid DVD. It's fun to watch for the pure historical value of it all, and the rough but ready-ness of the performance. Seek and ye shall find. It's out there to be had...

Well, if I was Jimmy Page I'd be concerned as well since Phil didn't bother to show up for rehearsal. This was the first Zep performance in five years after all, and now Phil wants to "sit in" for his fucking cross-ocean publicity stunt??

And to be fair, there's only one of the three Dylan tunes on there. He didn't block any of the performances, but someone axed them! They only have one of the Sabbath reunion performances also. It's not quite complete in many ways... like a certain missing Prince video!!

Led Zep had been rehearsing with Tony Thompson (the drummer for Chic) prior to this so I don't know why the decision was made to let Phil Collins even join in. Tony is quite capable and they didn't need 2 drummers so that was some bullshit to me.

Oops. I completely misunderstood the topic. For some reason, I was thinking about an possible upcoming performance in which Michael Jackson was asked to performed. I thought maybe Zep was gonna reunite for that one. But unfortunately, I never saw the Live-aid performance.

Robert Plant performed on Austin City Limits here a couple of years ago. He was still great. We have some DVDs of some Zep's performances. To me Robert Plant was just a sex-god. eek I thought he was sooooo HOT with his looks and the way he performed. My oh my. Oh, and the guy could and can sing, too. wink

Led Zep is my ALL TIME FAVORITE rocks bands. Next, I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As far as guitarists, my fave is the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan. Gotta give the Peppers and Stevie Ray some love.

I remember this performance...I remember all of my friends and I WAITING for Zep and all of us were so disappointed when it happened. Phil sucked ASS (and I DO think Phil is a good drummer...just wasn't ready for this)...but Plant kinda did too. I don't blame Jimmy for not want this in circulation...its definitely not one of their best performances...also imo, Zep isn't Zep without Bonzo and Jimmy knows it.

Yeah, I know. They said why there were no blacks hardly at live aid. SOmething like someone was spreading rumours about how they were being conned?

Jacko didn't do it as he was just lazy.

Well, the reasons I've heard are mostly because they weren't well rehearsed (not having played since Bonzo's death) Page's guitar was out of tune (which is a lame excuse, even for me being such a fan-girl. lol ), and was really sick being in the middle of kicking his heroin habit. I'm sure he didn't want to re-live those moments, and let everyone else witness a really rough show again. Page is very careful what he releases, so I was not surprised when I heard that he wasn't allowing the footage to be used for the DVD.
