? Just guessing. i bet if NME did a list, it would onyl include rock for starters and about 8 smiths albums. But maybe spin is more diverse.

Q magazine over here is now a bit better. Though they love kylie minogue now? How much do they get paid for that?

Probably half of what they pay you to like NKOTB wink

At least they were mentioned which most other lists never give them that respect due (they should be ahead of Nirvana since they spawned them).

"Rid Of Me" by PJ Harvey at number 9 ? Oh dear. I love Polly but I think it is by far her worst album. The production on it is really awful.

What's with all the Steve Albini hate on this thread?

I'm probably the biggest PJ fan going and it's easily my favorite of her albums.

i'd say it's a pretty decent list. Not my Top 10, certainly, but Radiohead's OK Computer would be at the top of my list.

Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are both great, but i'd have to give Surfer Rosa the edge. Also, I would pick To Bring You My Love instead of Rid of Me, but neither would be in my Top 10.

The Pavement album is the most out of line, in my opinion. Two that should be there:

So by Peter Gabriel & Achtung Baby by U2

1. Radiohead - OK Computer

My first impressions:

- Mildly disappointed to see My Bloody Valentine only at 22. With this type of magazine, I would think the top ten would be a lock for that record.

- Happy to see the Fall's This Nation's Saving Grace here - would have been even better to see it ranked higher, but I'll take what I'm given.

- I'm fairly ecstatic to see Husker Du's New Day Rising at 13 - usually the critics go for Zen Arcade, but I think this is the better album. EDIT - Just realized that Zen Arcade was released in '84, so obviously it's not going to be here.

- I would have thought Neutral Milk Hotel and Slint would have made the top twenty, as both records have really developed a rabid cult.

- The Pavement album is the only record in the top ten that I personally listen to with any regularity. I rated it 28 on my personal top 200 albums.

- Surprising to see Lucinda Williams' s/t album here, but no sign of Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. They're both great albums, but most rate Car Wheels over the s/t album.

Otherwise I think this is a pretty predictable list - about what you would expect from Spin. Perhaps it's a mild surprise to see Nevermind slipping a bit...

neutral I never got their appeal.

Conduit for Sale, Two States, is about the only thing I like on that album.

I don't read spin, so ....rather listen to Nirvana, Helmet, The Melvins, Flipper

Stone Roses way down at 78! Only one nod to Blur!! And no rank given to Primal Scream's "Sreamadelica"!!!

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot should have been higher on the list. This is one of those shining moments in music that dont come too often.. where an artist writes a whole album of beautiful songs, destroys them and breaks them down.. says Fuck the record company if they dont like it, we'll release it with another label, get dropped, and the same record company pays 3 times the amount they initially paid. (TIME WARNER)

Fuckin Brilliant if I might add

Um. Every cd listed on this list was popular with the masses.

I shoulda rephrased that I guess. But u know what I mean. No way would they put "thriller" in there for example, too commercial thus gets labelled as dumb crap.

No, but its all love...The album list is from the past 20 years...Thriller came out in 1982, so that's the reason it wasn't included....And I'm not the biggest Mike fan, but if the list is albums from the past 25 years, it would be foolish not to include Thriller on such a list...

U get 2 types of lists

One which is very commerical and popular at the masses

Or like this one, where music snobs list acts that were cool because they were unpopular with the masses

I know what your sayin', but you can't tag Spin with being hipper-than-thou. Chuck Klosterman, quoted above, has written a great (and hilarious) book championing the ultra-commercial 80's hair-metal scene (Fargo Rock City) and one chapter in his book Sex, Drugs and Coco Puffs makes a convincing argument that Billy Joel ranks as one of America's most authentic rock artists (I know, I know.... but you have to read it).

These things normally get such knee-jerk automatic replies from the dumbasses that vote for them, I am surprised that Sgt Pepper's lonely Hearts Club Band didn't manage to sneak onto the list by accident
