Sparks - Beat The Clock (1979)

Since we're touching on a lot of old disco tunes in the gay threads, I felt it was only right to dedicate a thread to this one.

This song is flat out groovin'. Love that driving beat and the way it changes shape towards the bridge. You can dance to this for hours.

I can see why a lot of people from the disco era aren't alive today. With music like this, drugs, and sex everywhere -- You'd explode. Hedonism was king back then and this song exemplifies it in its most purest form, IMO.

D*mn.

I also like to add that this song really set the stage for today's progressive house music along with Donna Summer's "I Feel Love." When you hear dances mixes today, a lot of them owe their structure to this tune.

Every single dance mix nowadays has a "build up/release" segment. "Beat The Clock" set the stage for it. Want proof? Listen to the breakdown. It's just the vocals with a bare beat, then the cymbals come in and a little piece of electro, then the synths, then the drums, then it flourishes back into the main groove. Every dance mix out today replicates this structure and "Beat The Clock" was one of the primary originals.

A bondafide classic.

I used 2 ABSOLUTELY ADORE Sparks in the 70s!!!!! I had their album Kimono My House, which had some really fantastic songs on their like Amatuer Hour and This Town Aint Big Enough For The Two Of Us(what a masterpeice!!)

They were a totally bizaar band, particularly the Mael Brothers!! The Keyboardist, Ron, sat totally stoic at the keyboards looking a cross between Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler!!!! lol lol lol lol But it was the lead singer, Russell, that got me having orgasms(even though I was only in my teens back then!!!! lol lol lol ). He was a total sex symbol, with those beautiful eyes, fantastic facial bone structure and the most beautiful hair I had ever seen on a guy!!!!

I just cant beleive that it was virtually 30+ years ago now!!! shocked shocked
