Color has zero to do with it, SOS. N'Sync (excuse me barf) had an R&b cut with Gone. I do not recall NKOTB being played on any R&B station in Chicago at the time. Please Don't Go Girl was garbage and no one I know considered it or The Right Stuff to be R&B.

Not related but NKOTB's "never let you go" woulda been huge if blackstreet did it. Of course, it helps if teddy riley wrote the cut. So point is, stations gotta rep to keep, so they just fuck NKOTB up the ass as their image ain't with the stations. But that cut was solid rnb (and good rnb too)

Donny osmonds late 80's comeback hit "soldier of love" (not an rnb cut wink ) was deliberately played without the dj's saying who the song was buy. To avoid labelling. It worked. When stations finially told, after the airplay was huge, people were shocked. Lukcily it worked.
[Edited 6/18/05 19:54pm]
What is your point with the Donny reference? Curious. They never played that song on R&b stations either.

Also, Luther Vandross is R&B, Teena is R&B, Patti LaBelle is R&B, nothing and I mean nothing is R&B about NKOTB. Had Blackstreet recorded that song, they would have given it a soulful sound. You can't sing soul if you don't have any.

You're referring to the remix with Nelly, I assume? The original cut was as pop as pop gets.
Gone had a remix with Nelly? barf Actually, that song had huge R&B crossover. When I hear it, I hear R&B.

Like people who say the Osmonds were less cool than J5 because they're white. Well, they were less cool, but it was because they sucked hairy moose balls, not because they were white. lol

Yeah, but 2 songs in the R&B vibe don't make you an R&B group. That's like saying Queen Latifah is a jazz singer now.

Gone got the R&B love because JT LOVES R&B and he sang it as an R&B song. Now listen to earlier songs by JT, they sound pop. NOW what does JT consider his style/vibe of music as a solo artist? R&B. Dude LOVES the R&B sound.

Where the fuck is the starter of this thread? Choooh0 hmmm

This is late, but fuckin. easy. Based on the question "Boy Band or typical R&B group", the answer is simple. They’re a Boy Band. I don't think anyone can argue that NKOTB were typical of most R&B groups in their look or sound.

Unless the author of this thread wants to clarify, based on the two choices and wording of question (ie...typical) NKOTB would be a Boy Band.

Please. Maybe in the minds of people that don't know what R&B is, but to TRUE R&Bers NKOTB wasn't even CONSIDERED FOR ONE HALF SECOND an R&B group.

There's no set number for what constitutes popular and what doesn't. But if something does manage to become popular, it's "pop"ular music.

Why people get so wound up about this is beyond me. Perhaps if they stopped assigning their own assumptions to the term, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Well if that ain't the pot calling the kettle black. Aren't YOU applying YOUR own assumptions as well?

no...it is still my belief that NKOTB had an R&B sound...and that racism is a factor in not calling them an R&B band..expecially since they were knocking off a R&B band (NE) that all black folks have no issue calling R&B..

but its my right to have this opinion just as it is your right not to believe they are an R&B group...

adults should be able to agree to disagree on issues....cha know!!

Agreeing to disagree is no problem, YOU set out to add the extras on it by saying who'd I make a perfect match with and that I'm venting, totally unnecessary.

And if they were trying to be an R&B band, how come they sang POP songs? Like I said, 2 R&B "sounding" songs don't make you a wanna-be R&B group.
