Can anyone show where the line between "boyband" and "R&B group" is drawn? Because as far as I can see, if there is one, it's a damn fine line.

yes they were..

I'm sorry but the NKOB were never a R&B band. To say that NKOB is R&B is like saying that Ozzy Osborne is an Soul singer which is an invalid statement.

So where is the line drawn? Because a lot of R&B groups are just as manufactured and plastic as a lot of boybands are, and a lot of boybands have the same tight harmonies and rhythms that a lot of R&B groups do.

Sometimes I wonder if it isn't about colour. (and I hate bringing that up, because I sincerely hope it isn't, and people who feel the need to make colour an issue where it shouldn't be are just fucking annoying) I've seen boybands with black members called R&B when they clearly weren't, and R&B groups with white members called boybands when they clearly weren't.

The best example I can think of is a few years ago, when pop music had infected even the local music scene. One obviously "pop" group with black and native members was refered to by the local press as an R&B group. Another, more R&B-centric group with 3 white and one asian member were called a boyband. Was it a colour issue? I don't know. shrug

your telling me Please Dont Go Girl was not an r&b song? The Right Stuff?

them songs were straight arse copies of New Edition....so either New Edition isnt r&b or NKOB is.....

sure, later down the road they went Pop....but at the begining they were just a copy of NE...

so whats it gonna be?

Contrary to popular belief, each boyband does have distinctions in it's style from the stock "boyband" sound. That said, the stock sound borrows a lot from R&B, dance, and occasionally country music and hair metal's power ballads. Don't buy that last one? Find yourself a copy of BSB's "Like a Child". It's not a power ballad per se, but it borrows heavily from that type of song.

I go by the Billboards and what they say. And in this case NKOB never sold a record on the R&B Charts. Therefore, it does not constitute them as being a R&B Group end of story. There is no sense in trying to make them more than what they are b/c its only music my friend.

i go by my ears....and just as you have the right to call something non-r&b via billboard i got the right to call it as such based on my ears...

thumbs up!

Interesting....

You're on a website devoted to someone who was a big pain in the ass to the industry for years, and has recently made a "comeback" from relative chart obscurity, and you're saying that the charts dictate what the music is.

In that case, Prince really did have a comeback. Billboard says so. nod

Yeah and so your point is. What is the relevance of your statement? Billboard was correct when they said that P made a hell of a comeback and made more then Madonna. You know your arguement about NKOB has no merit so you try to confuse the issue by bringing P into the conversation. talk to the hand Don't even try it and stick to subject which is NKOB being not being a R&B Group.

All I am saying is that no matter how you all may try to make NKOB an R& B Group their not. Your argument is baseless. Just look at the bulk of their album sells andwhere they land on the charts and that's it.

I'm not confusing the issue, I'm just applying the same standards to both acts. If Prince made a comeback, then NKOTB weren't R&B, but if Prince never went anywhere, then NKOTB may have been R&B.

Aristically, Prince is the superior. But since you brought Billboard into the discussion, both have to be judged on the same level commercially. The charts don't apply to a boyband but not to our wee Purple One.

Since when have you become an expert on R & B music tell me that?

There is no since in debate the issue b/c you are unaware what kind of groups are classified as R&B since you are canada.

Furthermore there is no way that you can put P and MKOB on the same level as P and say that they should be judged the same level comerically. So that shows your level of ignorance right there and you can your self a Prince fan lol .

After you've did a little more research, then will have something to conversate about.

Ur right. Colour is involved. Id new edition were white guys, then alot of people would dismiss it with no cred. Black makes it street, no matter how corny it is, like "candy girl".

"the right stuff" is rnb. it is rnb pop, whatever that is? If NKOTB were black, alot more people would dig it.

lol Are you seriously trying to insinuate I don't know what I'm talking about because of my nationality? Canadians: we're polite, live in igloos, and have good beer. We just don't know music.

As for judging them commercially, you're the one who brought up Billboard to argue your point, not me.

BTW, there's no such word as "conversate". wink

Like people who say the Osmonds were less cool than J5 because they're white. Well, they were less cool, but it was because they sucked hairy moose balls, not because they were white. lol

I always loved "one bad apple". That was offered to the jackson five first.

Besides jordan knight was better lead singer then ralph. Even when ralph was an adult, I still prefer jordans voice. Jordan can do some nice falcetto too.

Glenn medeiros' 1990 album, was rnb. "she ain't worth it" was an rnb song. And of course bobby brown gave it some street cred by rapping on it (Bobby can rap good). NKOTB got flavor flav to rap on "no more games" at the american music awards.

I reckon donny went for the jordan knight look.

Those sounds maurice made on "the right stuff" were hiphop beats. No joke

maurice did EXACTLY the same theing with New kids as he did with NE, excpet he saw the boundries he had with NE, so he got a white version instead.

"candy girl" is waaaaay more cheesy then "the right stuff".
