Billy Squier

"The Big Beat"

The first time i listened to this song,i thought it was zepplins Robert Plant.Back in the day brothers were breakn' to the breaks in this cut.
Those breaks have been sampled by a few rappers.

That lead me to more of his shit, like the "Don't Say No" LPwith

Stroke
Too Daze Gone
In The Dark
Lonely Is The Night
My Kinda Lover
You Know What I Like
Nobody Knows
I Need You

"actually that whole lp was lit"
plus some tracks on the Emotions in Motion LPlike,

Listen To The Heart Beat
Emotions In Motion
Everybody Wants You
Learn How To Live
Keep Me Satisfied

I always hoped that VH-1 would have done a "Behind The Music" special on him. I'm sure his story would be quite interesting. He jammed with Jimi Hendrix and went out with one of Jim Morrison's girlfriends (Pamela I think) and his old band Piper opened for KISS in the 70's. He was huge in the 80's until he did that "Rock Me Tonight" video. Then that killed his career. It would be cool to hear his whole take on all that.

I never knew there was so much love for Billy on the org!

I think my first introduction to Billy was when he opened in concert in Mpls for Queen, a show that I saw when I was about twelve. I was immediately hooked. Then MTV was born and he was on a lot. He was my favorite for a few years as a young teen. I saw him again in Mpls headlining with the band Ratt as opener. biggrin

Practically wore out my Don't Say No and Emotions in Motion LP

However, I'm not sure what "Big Beat" is confuse And I must have dropped out of fandom before the Rock Me Tonight video, because that doesn't ring a bell either confuse

I love "on our own" from the little known, but classic 80's "metropolis" soundtrack. Do his other songs sound like this (very 80's track)

I like his voice.

He has a good voice and pretty good songs but the arrangements/instrumentation are weak. There's just not enough meat to them, when it seems like they could really rock. He was very sexy on stage though. batting eyes

Now he's cut off all his hair and looks completely different.

Billy had just enough of the Zep vibe to make you do a double-take when you initially heard him.

Like Cee, my favorite Squier tune was Emotion In Motion (probably the funk factor) followed by Everybody Wants You.

The fall came after the Rock Me Tonight video.
All his hard rock fans felt betrayed by his prancing around in the video.
Not really out of that period's style book of hard rock poses and stances.

Here it is:
http://www.davemmr.com/vi...2nite.html

The writer of this points out that the dancing looked gay omfg

Hey, I actually do remember seeing this, of course, and loving it. They say he pranced around like a schoolgirl, but me being a schoolgirl I don't think it bothered me much. Seems a little silly that that alone could ruin someone's career. Not a bad song though and he still looks sexy. batting eyes

In 1984, Signs Of Life charted at #11 and cracked the platinum level; its "Rock Me Tonite" single peaked in the Top 20. But the awkward video for that song, Squier notes, "wreaked havoc on my career." He also wanted to progress musically, but had little support. "My success created a perception of who I was, and therefore how I should look and what I symbolized. If I deviated, I lost credibility. If I stepped out of "the box," there was no acceptance. It's one of the ironies of success: people don't want you to change." -www.marstalent.com/bio_billy_squier.htm
