David Bowie I hear this guy is a lot like Prince so I'm willing to check him out. What's he like? Rock? Soul? What is a good album to start with? Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

The only Bowie record I own is The Best Of Bowie which has two discs of Bowie's music. Check me out and add me on:

Easiest way in to his catalog is probably through a hits package; that way you can decide which era of Bowie will suit you best. His back catalog is extremely diverse; this way you can pick and choose which studio album will appeal most.
Otherwise, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, and Hunky Dory are probably the "easiest" studio albums to start off with. Or maybe Let's Dance, but it's half excellent and half mediocre. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

It would be more correct to say that Prince is a lot like Bowie, not the other way around, as Bowie is a predecessor to prince by more than a decade. Bowie indeed is a lot like a prince in that he's prolific, eclectic, weird,is a skilled multi-instrumentalist and cultivated a strange, mysterious, androgynous image. Bowie is often pigeon-holed as "glam-rock", but he's covered a helluva lot of ground from metal and folk to philly soul and even funk. Ziggy Stardust is my and a lot of other people's choices for his best, but his 70s run of albums is a lot like Prince's 80s run.

Depends on what you like and what you know by him. If you're wanting to get hardcore and cover all ground, I'd start with Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust and move your way forward through his catelogue. If you want something modern and easy to digest, I'd say go for his last few - Heathen and Reality. If you want something closer to what Prince does, try Station to Station, Scary Monsters or maybe Let's Dance. Enjoy the ride.

Can anyone tell me how good the Station To Station, Low, and Heroes albums are? I heard they are good, but I never got a chance to check them out because I've never been a 'real' Bowie fan... [Edited 6/13/05 5:20am] Check me out and add me on:

honestly? i'd say just go to a wrecka stow and pick out an album or two that looks interesting to you, or that has a few songs that you know or have heard of. then work your way forward or back chronologically if you like what you hear. a good 'greatest hits' compilation is a good way to break the ice - the "best of bowie" compilations are good. try to get one of the two-disc versions if you go that route. even better, get the DVD 'best of bowie' comp or the reality tour DVD - either should give you a really good idea of what you'll be getting into, and what parts of his career might be more up your alley, whether it's his new wave phase, his early glam phase, his mid-70s 'plastic soul' phase, or whatever.
hope this is helpful. | |

also, i just saw this on the david bowie web site:
As exclusively revealed on a Queen fansite back in March, (Grrrrr) David Bowie is the latest EMI artist to receive the triple CD Platinum Collection treatment.
The 3 CDs (which are normally housed in a slipcase) comprise the previously released The Best Of David Bowie 1969/1974 and 1974/1979, along with the newly compiled The Best Of David Bowie 1980/1987. There is no new cover artwork available just yet, but, at least we can exclusively reveal the breakdown for the third CD which you can see below after the tracklisting for the two previously released CDs: The Best Of David Bowie 1969/1974 01 The Jean Genie 02 Space Oddity 03 Starman 04 Ziggy Stardust 05 John, I'm Only Dancing 06 Rebel Rebel 07 Let's Spend The Night Together 08 Suffragette City 09 Oh! You Pretty Things 10 Velvet Goldmine 11 Drive-in Saturday 12 Diamond Dogs 13 Changes 14 Sorrow 15 The Prettiest Star 16 Life On Mars? 17 Aladdin Sane 18 The Man Who Sold The World 19 Rock 'N' Roll Suicide 20 All The Young Dudes The Best Of David Bowie 1974/1979 01 Sound And Vision 02 Golden Years 03 Fame 04 Young Americans 05 John, I'm Only Dancing (Again) 06 Can You Hear Me 07 Wild Is The Wind 08 Knock On Wood 09 TVC 15 10 1984 11 It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City 12 Look Back In Anger 13 The Secret Life Of Arabia 14 D.J. 15 Beauty And The Beast 16 Breaking Glass 17 Boys Keep Swinging 18 "Heroes" The Best Of David Bowie 1980/1987 01 Let's Dance (single version) 02 Ashes To Ashes (single version) 03 Under Pressure (Queen with David Bowie) 04 Fashion (single version) 05 Modern Love (single version) 06 China Girl (single version) 07 Scary Monsters (single version) 08 Up The Hill Backwards 09 Alabama Song 10 Drowned Girl 11 Cat People (film version single edit) 12 This Is Not America (David Bowie and The Pat Metheny Group) 13 Loving The Alien (album version) 14 Absolute Beginners (single version) 15 When The Wind Blows 16 Blue Jean 17 Day-In Day-Out (single version) 18 Time Will Crawl 19 Underground (single version) I'm sure the above tracklisting will start some healthy debate on the MBs, and I look forward to reading your alternative suggestions...as ever. Due in October, the 57-track David Bowie - The Platinum Collection will be a great low-priced starting point for those just beginning to appreciate the work of the former Glam Rock God.

Bowie is one of my all time favorite artists and is one of my biggest musical influences. He is a PARAMOUNT artist, and definately one of the most important. Bowie has done damn near everything, musically. From Dylan/Beatle type folk rock to glam, to soul, to funk/rock, to alternative, all BOWIE style. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I saw that on Wonderworld but forgot to post. Out of all the Bowie best of's/box sets/anthologies/whatever. I liked those original 2 the best. It looks like they've done a good job with the 3rd disc as well. Too bad they stopped short and didn't just add a 4th to bring it up to the present.
