OMFG... we musta grew up in the same house finess the best was when my dad would blast his stereo and let us play outside late on summer nights while he and my uncle sat on the porch and drank beer and smoked weed. those moments are some the best from my childhood and just growing up. sometimes i think my life reads like a soundtrack anyways . my mom loooooved teddy pendergrass. she used to wear out "don't look any further" by dennis edwards. she played the diana ross album with "i miss you" on it. ummm the "can't slow down" album by lionel ritchie. actually they're are too many to name now. every now and then i go back and listen to her old records (along with my new editon, prince, and mj albums and various 12inch singles).

oh, lord...
LOTS of frank zappa, first and foremost. mainly "tinseltown rebellion", "joe's garage", "you are what you is" and "sheik yerbouti", but everything from "freak out" to "hot rats" to the orchestral stuff from the '80s. after that, there was always lots of jimi hendrix, beatles, moody blues, alice cooper, dixie dregs, old bowie (usually "aladdin sane" or "diamond dogs"), and a fair amount of allman brothers and foghat to round out an obligatory '70s record collection. oh, and some police and some U2. i remember a bit of that in the early '80s.

Well, this is actually recent.
My mom (who is 61 years old) really likes the song "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys and Ursher. That's the FIRST time I remember her liking ANYTHING current. Usually she's just into jazz or no music altogether. She likes Macy Gray, too. I downloaded it for her to listen to. Other than that, my father is the musical one in the family. He was actually one of child voices you hear in Frank Sinatra's tune "High Hopes" (so when you hear that song know that JANFAN4L's father was one of the kid voices). My father was also in a Los Angeles-based R&B/doo wop group in the 1960s called the Wooden Nickels. They performed around various clubs in the L.A. area. My parents are babyboomers, so their music tastes tend to be pre-1970. They are VERY MUCH into Doo Wop and early rock 'n' roll. They love the Flamingos, Shirelles, Platters, Frankie Lymon, Fats Domino — all that stuff. They went to one of those PBS Doo Wop specials 2 years ago in Pittsburg. My late uncle was into a lot of Parliament and he has ALL the major soul/R&B albums from the '70s (Stevie, Marvin, Mayfield, Pendergrass, Diana, etc.) He even had Janet's Control on vinyl — all of which my brother now hordes. He had a lot of 8-tracks that I OBVIOUSLY can't play. . [Edited 6/13/05 20:40pm]
