...but this is my favorite.

1. 2 album set
2. It's half LIVE (the other half is pseudo-live)
3. It includes 2 of his best bands since it was recorded in the midst of a mutiny.

Live at the Apollo.

Xcellent call, Marrk. Live At The Apollo is a veritable classic.
Eye also have N The Jungle Groove. Again, this doesn't appear 2 b an authentic studio album.
Is it the case that he was more of a live artist, or better at singles, than producing cohesive albums?

Definitely more of a singles artist. However, here's some that I recommend:

"Gettin' Down To It" (superb jazz trio album that's to be reissued on CD in August)

"Soul On Top" (JB does the big band thing and comes out of it surprisingly well. Recently reissued on CD)

"The Payback" (I agree with this choice. Check out "Mind Power" in particular. Available on CD but has been deleted, I think)

"It's A Mother" (James really indulges his popcorn fetish on this one. Three tracks featuring the word "Popcorn" in the title. Available on crappy vinyl bootleg made to look like a genuine Polydor re-release. Track down an original on eBay instead)

"Revolution Of The Mind" (OK, a live album but the best one he's ever done. Often referred to as Live At The Apollo Vol.3, this is a genuine live document of 1971 Apollo shows. The band are on fire, as is James. Out of all the five I've mentioned, this is the "must have" one, but it has been discontinued on CD. Shouldn't be too hard to track down, however)

However the bottom line is that James Brown, at his core, is a LIVE act that should be seen or at least heard in that context to be fully appreciated.
