I think her songs are generally good, but she's far from being anything close to a musical genius. She's got talent, but compare her to artists like Prince and she's instantly nothing special.

Her wailing is annoying , can't stand it
But she's hot if she's not wearing a hat or bandana's or whatever,
they make her look masculine

Why comparing her to Prince ???hmm
Prince isn't the only artist to compare to...

I prefer compare her to all the best soul pianist it's more accurate ...

I think Alicia Keys is far from talentless and she's definitely a looker but I fail to see where the genius is. Have I not seen enough of her shows or something? Have I not listened to enough of her songs? She seems more like a pseudo-musician to me and sometimes I think the only reason why some orgers praise her is because she sucked up to Prince.

I agree in part. Alicia is definitely a talented singer, songwriter, and musician. I would go as far to say that she is "gifted," but I'm not sure about genius. I think she's beautiful, too, plus she seems to have this "down-to-earth personality which appeals to me. To me, Alicia would have fans regardless of Prine's influence. But it does help that Prince kinda "validated" her in some respect by taking an interest in Alicia's career.

This is OFF-TOPIC, but I sometimes wonder exactly what WOULD be considered a "genuis" today. It seems like nearly EVERYTHING has been done before. I will say one of the most recent "genuis" producing efforts over the past years would be Rick Rubin's "Hurt" for Johnny Cash. There is also this band in Latin music that uses Tejano mixed with rap, but I can't remember its name. I just saw a feature about em on a T.V. show about Latin music. Also I would imagine there are a few underground bands that are quite unique, but I'm not familiar with them.

Shes definitely a talented girl, and she seems to have learnt a lot from the people she states as her idols. Shes a great songwriter and pianist. the thing is that theres not many out there with any talent at all these days so they focus on those that have some.
So I guess you could say she is overrated, but only because theyve got noone else to talk about.

I've never bothered with one of her albums, because I haven't wholly liked what I've heard of hers. While I wouldn't dare say that she's untalented, I wouldn't put her on a silver platter just because she's able to put together a melody and play the keys. Plenty of people can do that, and because today's music scene is so stale it seems she is revered just for that alone.

Any of her songs that I've heard remind me of other people's compositions. They don't seem all that original. For the most part, what she does is just well enough. She sings just well enough, she writes just well enough, she looks good enough (with the right makeup, clothes, stylists, photographers, airbrushing, lighting, angles, etc.), and she's just "ghetto" enough. I put that in quotes for a reason. That last one, in combination with everything else, makes her marketable. "Hey, the girl from the 'hood that made good! Damn, bottle that shit up and sell it!" It's a gimmick, and a lot of people have fallen for it.

Of the things I know she can do, the only place I'd rank her above average is her piano/keyboard playing. She's great at that. Hell, keep her behind the scenes as a session musician. I'd be okay with that.

nod Agreed. You're right on target to italicize the word stolen.

I agree. When they started mentioning her name in the same breath with Stevie Wonder only 10 minutes after the ink dried on her debut, that's when the ill emoticons started popping up on my end.

Fair point.
But in this day and age thats hardly rare. With the tiny volume of decent music released today im grateful for any reason to turn on the radio, even if i may as well be putting on an old album!

I agree. She is so overrated. I fume when people walk around this office where I work talking about how much they love Alicia Keys. I am thinking: WHY? Why so much love for her. This one lady at my job had the nerve to say, "she sure knows how to bang on some piano!!" I was like WHAT! Fiona Apple knows piano, Vanessa Carlton knowns how to bang on some piano!!! I am like YOU don't know talent woman!!! So busy listening to hip hop, and then Alicia Keys comes along and they think they've found some talent! Please!!!
