LIVE 8 "HIDEOUSLY WHITE"

The London wing of the five concerts taking place on July 2 as part of the Live 8 event has been branded "hideously white". A campaign group called Black Information Link is highlighting the absence of black artists on the bill, pointing out that Mariah Carey is the only act from an ethnic minority.

They say that organisers behind the Bob Geldof-fronted initiative "handpicked a virtually all-white line-up". However, at the concerts taking place elsewhere in the world, there is a broader ethnic mix in evidence. Stevie Wonder, 50 Cent and Jay-Z will play in Philadelphia, Youssou N'Dour and Craig David in Paris and Lauryn Hill in Berlin.

A spokesperson for Live 8 claimed that Geldof approached a number of black artists to take part in the London event but none were available. But a representative for UK chart-topper Jamelia, thought to have been overlooked because she is six months pregnant, said: "I'm sure she would like to play some part in the event."
Speaking to the BBC, Justin Onyeka, Entertainment Editor for New Nation, expressed disappointment that high profile UK Urban acts like Beverley Knight, Dizzee Rascal and Ms Dynamite were not playing. "It was the same problem 20 years ago when major black artists were backing singers to other acts," he said. "It's time they learnt from previous experience."
The London line-up features artists including Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Madonna, U2, Robbie Williams, Dido and Elton John.

I don't get how Live 8 works.....

Does Bob Geldof actually invite the performers to play, or does the performers volunteer?

I believe Bob contacted the artists, I was thinking the same thing when the line up was leaked. I would love to see Beverly Knight or Lamar, Omar or another great black english artist on the stage. what about Sade?

First of all, Bob Geldof is Not behind this event, it has been organized by BONO and then was past on to Officials in the London and African Governments, who are setting the whole thing up.

yes, the London venue is lacking black artists, but i'm not sure if it was intentional or just oddly co-incidental.

There's a lot of key black performers from America missing though like Aretha, Tina Turner, Donna Summer, Janet Jackson, etc etc...

This is a charity concert and some petty group is turning it into a race issue because the concentration of black performers at one or two concerts doesn't match the rest? I could suggest much more important issues facing blacks today that NEED protest, such as (the lack of) American funding of AIDS treatments in Africa, drug companies that are using Africans as guinea pigs, racial injustice in the US, and so on. But this is guaranteed publicity, and really important issues are not.

The Event honestly will be ruined by corporate sponsors. Between MTV, AOL, and all these other things, this event will be a disaster. Like I posted in an earlier LIVE 8 thread, the spirit of the day from 20 years ago will never be captured again. Too many performers of "today" will make this about themselves, and their new single and their new CD. And then MTV will really ruin it when it has commentary by Jon Norris and Sway, whose head is so far up his own ass, and talks about how great Maroon 5 and 50 cent are, oh please.

And the funny think about that, is the biggest Protester to America and how we basically let a whole country die off, is Bono.

Yes, it's already becoming depressing. Just looking at the list of young acts involved, i feel it is ruined.

The spirit will be shown in Germany's concert, when AHA shows the true spirit, but wait MTV wont show their performance, because there not Maroon 5 or Usher or Beyonce or someone like that.....wait for the DVD

nod I hate to say it but their discriptions were dead on. When I looked at the American line up, I was like what the fuck. Shit, they totally excluded our boy and other good Black American acts. Whoever arranged the American lineup was some racist muthafuckas.

I always wonder how the officials and older critics of Madonna feel now in days after claiming she would never amount to anything but a disco dolly...
That's something to ponder.

One of them whose name i can't remember, said shit about how Madonna will last 6 months and Cyndi Lauper would be around forever. Then around the time of Blond Ambition he was licking her ass crack like no other.

Well, you have to admit that the omission of black stars from the UK line-up of a concert for Africa is quite ... urm ... GLARING. If we didn't have any homegrown black stars here then fair enough, but ... we've got a good few.

Not to rain on everyones parade, but the truth of the matter is, that most of the artists for these events Volunteer to play, a few may be asked to play, but in the case of LIVE AID many were NOT asked they gave their time. My point being that is says more about ourselves that many of TODAYS "so called" artists are not even volunteering for an event like this, ( an event that should be supported by everyone as opposed to supporting WAR in Iraq)

If the point of this post is that BONO is a racist then that is pretty sad, if that was the case why arent ARTISTS complaining about being Denied a chance to play because of their race??? As opposed to a tabloid printing a garbage story like this. What they should be printing in EVERY PAPER EVERYDAY is how we are letting a WHOLE country die why we bitch about Gas Prices, CD prices, and worry about Britney & Kevin.

Do we know what went on behind the scenes? No. So I don't think we can label the fact that one concert doesn't have many black performers (while other venues have a nice mix of ethnicities) as intentionally racist planning on the part of Live Aid organizers. It frankly strikes me as ridiculous.
