Carey's 'Emancipation' Returns To No. 1

By Margo Whitmire, L.A.

Mariah Carey rebounds 3-1 with "The Emancipation of Mimi" to give the Island Def Jam set a second non-consecutive week atop The Billboard 200, where it debuted in April. The set reclaims the throne despite a 4% dip to 172,000 U.S. copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Also inching back toward the summit is System Of A Down's "Mezmerize" (American/Columbia), which enjoys a 4-2 boost despite a hefty 30% fall to sales of 118,000. Last week's chart-topper, Audioslave's "Out of Exile" (Interscope/Epic), falls to No. 3 on a 62% slide to 99,000.

Carey and SOAD lead an upward chart trend for most existing top 10 acts, which, in a pause from the slew of new entries over the past few weeks, are climbing in spite of declining sales. The only titles bucking the trend are Gwen Stefani's solo debut, "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" (Interscope), which reaches a new Billboard 200 peak with a 10-5 gain on the strength of a 9% increase to 83,000 copies; and Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" (RCA), which rebounds 14-9 on a 12% boost to 69,100.

Toby Keith's "Honkytonk University" (DreamWorks Nashville) moves 5-4 even though the set sold 34% less than the previous week at 85,000. Dave Matthews Band's "Stand Up" (RCA) holds steady at No. 7 for a second week with 76,000, while 50 Cent's "The Massacre" (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) climbs 11-8 after registering a 1% dip at 75,000.

Rounding out the top tier is Common's "Be" (G.O.O.D./Geffen), which falls 2-6 on a 58% drop in sales to 77,000, and Il Divo's self-titled Sony effort, which slips 9-10 on a 13% decline to 69,000.

With its highest debut and best sales week in almost a decade, Oasis' "Don't Believe the Truth" (Epic) enters The Billboard 200 at No. 12 with a first-week total of 65,000 copies. The British band's previous effort, 2002's "Heathen Chemistry," started at No. 23 with 38,000 and has sold 143,000 copies to date. Oasis' career-best debut remains 1997's "Be Here Now," which started at No. 2 with 152,000 and has sold 991,000 so far.

With 20,000 units, Kottonmouth Kings' self-titled Suburban Noize effort arrives at No. 50. Last year, the group's "Fire It Up" started at No. 42 with 23,000 copies and has sold 85,000 to date. Also debuting in the top half of the chart are Better Than Ezra's "Before the Robots" (Artemis, No. 84) and Layzie Bone's "It's Not a Game" (Cleopatra, No. 96).

At 10.3 million units, overall U.S. album sales were down 3.4% from the previous week and off 10.5% from the same week last year. Sales for 2005 are behind those of last year by about 8% at 239 million units.

yeah.. she debuted at #1 in her first week and has been hanging out at #2 or #3 the past several weeks while new releases come and go at the top. It was a slow week for new release allowing her to get back to #1 this week. She has been consistanty selling around 170,000 a week .

Well, while she has the momentum - do U think she should drop her third single?

Maybe it will be - Say Something - the single is already recieving some airplay.

Shake It Off has already been announced as the third single.

Interesting to note that Gwen's album reaches a new peak (#5) this week.

nod

Mariah Carey's making plans for her next single, which she's decided will be "Shake It Off," a track produced by Jermaine Dupri. "Jermaine is in such a great place musically," Carey told MTV News recently. "I mean, everything he's done over the past two years, it's just beyond huge, first of all. But second of all, he's just focused. Like he's very much in the space he needs to be in musically. And I feel like I am as well." Carey calls the song "totally one of my favorites," but hasn't decided yet on the director or concept for the video, according to her label rep.

Check out the lack of rap/hip-hop at the top of the chart.

Is the tide finally turning?

"Shake It Off" is weak for a single choice. I'd much rather she release "Get Your Number"; it's a much more funky track. BTW, VH1 said that she and Snoop Dogg are working on the video for "Say Something" so I have a feeling that this is going to be released as a single soon.

As for the albums which knocked Mariah off the top of the charts, they went in order like this:

Rob Thomas - Something To Be
Bruce Springsteen - Devils And Dust
Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
Dave Matthews Band - Stand Up
System Of A Down - Mezmerize
Audioslave - Out Of Exile

I'm so happy for Mariah being back on top of the album charts, woot! but she better enjoy this week while it lasts. The new releases by Coldplay, The White Stripes, Black Eyed Peas and Shakira will chart next week, and the Foo Fighters and Fat Joe follow the week after.

Who knows. I was suprised Mariah even got a record back on the radio let alone break airplay records. Her singles from the last album bareley broke the 10 million mark
