I LOVE Sly. The man is pure genius and he changed the face of music forever. I mean there are only a few people that can honestly say they inspired a new movement in music. His albums are timeless, challenging, and multi-layered, and his band mixed-race/sexed band was a reflection of society. Furthermore, Sly was a multi-instrumentalist who often was the only musician on his songs. I just do not think that people honestly understand how brilliant Sly Stone is. The guy was a consummate studio musician and song writer, yet he was able to take it to the stage and create a funk revival everytime he played live. Sly was so good that most bands feared following him at music festivals.

Sadly, people only focus on the negative with Sly and that's a damn shame because his impact on music is immense. There's A Riot Goin On and Fresh should be required listening for anyone that wants to truly understand what music is about. Pure genius from a man with very few peers.
People focus on the negative with practically everyone. The hate spewn in the direction of Rick James also truly makes me sad. Whatever demons he had or sly has, will not take away the pure unadulterated genius that shone through at their prime. It's been a really long time since Sly made a hit but I still prefer anything from him over 99% of what's passing for R&B today.

Let's not compare Sly with Rick please. It's funny how that offends me lol -- the way somebody comparing Prince to MJ does. They are not comparable. It's not like comparing apples and oranges but rather like comparing a frozen Celeste pizza to a gourmet one. I know some prefer the frozen one but once you acquire the taste for the complexities and nuances of the gourmet one there's no comparison.... and no pizza isn't just pizza.

I could go on and on about the artistry, the social awareness, and the vision of Sly. I only regret I didn't get to see him in person. Maybe that's for the better judging by some of the accounts on this thread.

Maybe the above post wasn't trying to compare Rick to Sly but I don't throw the term genius around so if Sly's a genius and Prince is a genius than Rick isn't.

You're right. I wasn't comparing the two.

whodnee, i've gotta say you're wrong. You (and I) would have loved to have seen him.
In his prime, Sly & The Family Stone would tear shit up!
It's just unfortunate that the few on this board (myself included) that have commented so far, caught him at a bad time.

You're probably right. Besides, even a crappy concert beats wasting time on the computer.

Let me tell you brother, those Fillmore East shows were nuts!
I'm not sure how much you're into 60s acts, but they featured a wide range.
For example one night was Santana, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Tower of Power.
Another night Ray Charles and Dizzy Gillespie.
All this for like $3.50 to $5.50 a ticket. $10 if you paid a scalper.

That's no kind of joke right there.
Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Props will be withheld until the showing and proving has commenced. -- Aaron McGruder

Here's a couple more websites you might find interesting. There is a new Sly Stone fan site at www.slyandthefamilystone.net. It's not finished but it does have a fan forum. Also, there is a new Sly documentary in the works called On The Sly: In Search Of The Family Stone. There isn't much info about it yet but the site is www.onthesly.net.
