What happened to orchestras in music? I'm sittin here listenin to
"Walk On By" by Isaac Hayes. And I'm wondering what happened to strings in soul music. Even something like Prince and the Clare Fischer strings, just doesn't seem to happen all that often. If you know some newer soul music that has real strings on it, reply!

And thesexofit is as pleased as punch. Seriously though, it probably boils down to... ...as usual. Hiring an orchestrator, the actual muscians, etc. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. That's the part I don't get. It wasn't inexpensive back in the day either.

True. I think back then, it was expected that real muscians would be doing these sessions. If an orchestra was needed, then so be it. It's all part of the budget. But part of the answer may also lie within a deeper question...what happened to soul music? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm [Edited 6/6/05 17:02pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Bjork totally rocks an orchestra, but then again, she isn't exactly soul music.

I'm not sure what I'm getting at.
It's just I'm listening to a song like "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" by Tyrone Davis, and thinkin' ... no one would even bother to have a string segment like that, even if it was only a quartet.

Yup. Then along came Pro-tools and Logic and a million sound cards to render the beloved string orchestra quasi-obsolete for recording...

Funny.....I just made a cd with a bunch of Love Unlimited Orchestra, Salsoul Orchestra and MFSB stuff on it. I'd like to put Ashford and Simpson's Bourgie Bourgie in that same category as well. Good stuff man. I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.
