Glen Goins Appreciation Thread

I watched the George Clinton with Parliament Funkadelic: The Mothership Connection DVD last night and I gained a new appreciation for the vocal prowess of the late vocalist/guitarist, Glen Goins. I've always appreciated his skills on various Parliament tracks, Mothership Connection, Unfunky UFO, Bop Gun, I've Been Watching You, Funkin For Fun etc, but seeing the brotha sing in the live setting blew me away. I just thought I would start a thread about a man that is rarely mentioned when we list the great male vocalist of all time. Goins had a soulful vocal style that took Parliament to an unmatchable level!

Great vocals and Guitar playing! IMO, the best vocalist ever in P-funk, a collective that already had so many great voices. Unfortunately he left P-Funk after '77, and later passed away from Hodgkins disease in July of 78. P-Funk was never the same after he left...

Whenever Glen Goins came in, he took the song to another level. He was always my favorite PFunk vocalist. Glad to see him appreciated.

Glen was DEFINITELY the best vocalist the whole P-Funk mob ever had- I've read that several members of the P-Funk mob have said this themselves" Bernie, Fred & others..

REAL SMALL, I would say!

most of us here know, Glen had a falling out with George's P-Funk mob, but I don't know (or don't remember?) what exactly the nature of it was..

was it that Glen thought that George was not managing the band well,
or did Glen think that he was underutilized or underappreciated by Clinton??
does anyone have the info on this, or a link on this??

It was about $$$$$, GC wasn't paying the band, and Glenn and others were tired of this shit. So they left the band.
Glenn was fired after he confronted GC or the manager, about the $$$

After Glenn left Pfunk,Garry Shider started singing Glenn parts.
But you cannot replace Glenn. So it went downhill after 77.

ah okay,

thanks for the info, Tosh.

too bad GC did not pay the band. it's hard to imagine he could think that the band would play on stage - giving incredible performance after incredible performance - without paying them..

Glen Goins was the "Gospel Preacher" of P-Funk. His voice took me to church. On "Fantasy Is Reality", that was pure Glen at his peak. With his vocals and Eddie's lead solo, it just had so much sprituality to it. I grew up right on the edge of Plainfield NJ (P-Funk's hometown) and back then, a lot of cats wanted and tried to sing like Glen. I saw Glen's brother sing a few years ago and his voice was almost the same. Glen was definetly a P-Funk legend.
