LIVE 8 "HIDEOUSLY WHITE" The London wing of the five concerts taking place on July 2 as part of the Live 8 event has been branded "hideously white". A campaign group called Black Information Link is highlighting the absence of black artists on the bill, pointing out that Mariah Carey is the only act from an ethnic minority.
They say that organisers behind the Bob Geldof-fronted initiative "handpicked a virtually all-white line-up". However, at the concerts taking place elsewhere in the world, there is a broader ethnic mix in evidence. Stevie Wonder, 50 Cent and Jay-Z will play in Philadelphia, Youssou N'Dour and Craig David in Paris and Lauryn Hill in Berlin. A spokesperson for Live 8 claimed that Geldof approached a number of black artists to take part in the London event but none were available. But a representative for UK chart-topper Jamelia, thought to have been overlooked because she is six months pregnant, said: "I'm sure she would like to play some part in the event." Speaking to the BBC, Justin Onyeka, Entertainment Editor for New Nation, expressed disappointment that high profile UK Urban acts like Beverley Knight, Dizzee Rascal and Ms Dynamite were not playing. "It was the same problem 20 years ago when major black artists were backing singers to other acts," he said. "It's time they learnt from previous experience." There's a lot of key black performers from America missing though like Aretha, Tina Turner, Donna Summer, Janet Jackson, etc etc... | |

This is a charity concert and some petty group is turning it into a race issue because the concentration of black performers at one or two concerts doesn't match the rest? I could suggest much more important issues facing blacks today that NEED protest, such as (the lack of) American funding of AIDS treatments in Africa, drug companies that are using Africans as guinea pigs, racial injustice in the US, and so on. Not to rain on everyones parade, but the truth of the matter is, that most of the artists for these events Volunteer to play, a few may be asked to play, but in the case of LIVE AID many were NOT asked they gave their time. My point being that is says more about ourselves that many of TODAYS "so called" artists are not even volunteering for an event like this, ( an event that should be supported by everyone as opposed to supporting WAR in Iraq)
If the point of this post is that BONO is a racist then that is pretty sad, if that was the case why arent ARTISTS complaining about being Denied a chance to play because of their race??? As opposed to a tabloid printing a garbage story like this. What they should be printing in EVERY PAPER EVERYDAY is how we are letting a WHOLE country die why we bitch about Gas Prices, CD prices, and worry about Britney & Kevin. No. So I don't think we can label the fact that one concert doesn't have many black performers (while other venues have a nice mix of ethnicities) as intentionally racist planning on the part of Live Aid organizers.
