Chicago appreciation (and peter cetera if u want)

Love some of this. Corny, horns blazing (which turned into fake horns). Good ballads, though some apalling ones even by my standards

fav songs

Niagra falls (foster is a genius)
What does it take (such a good power ballad)
Somebody, somewhere
chasin' the wind (diane warren strikes again, was this a hit? It shoulda been)
You come to my senses
Heart in pieces (love the guitar, very catchy)
Look away (doesn't have credits, but it sounds diane warren?)
What kind of man would I be?
Hard to say I'm sorry

Chicago 17 rocks the most

Stay the night
We can stop the hurtin' baby
hard habit to break
only you

whole album is great.

Second fav goes to chicago 21. David Foster got booted off I see after 18. Any more albums after "21"?

These albums saved me at times. My dad hates them. Says earlier stuff beats it (like genesis sold out too) but I dont care. I love these albums to death. He has the early stuff, I got the commercial later stuff.

Plus, I have said this before, but peters albums are good too. Like "only love" "next time I fall" "man in me" and the duet with chaka khan "feels like heaven".

Big Chicago fan, but like your dad,...

...i'm partial to their earlier material.

It's interesting that you have Chicago 17 in your list (probably their biggest selling album).
Nestled between the Peter Cetera led massive hits (Hard Habit To Break, You're The Inspiration, Stay The Night) are traces of the old Robert Lamm/Jimmy Pankow led Chicago (We Can Stop The Hurtin', Only You) and what could have been a revitalized group with the addition of fine vocalist/writer Bill Champlin (Please Hold On).

As for Peter Cetera, I just don't dig his solo material.

There was only really 18 & 19 after that.
They haven't had a new release (outside of Live and Xmas discs) with new material since they turned 21 in '91.

They still tour like crazy though.

Your Chicago thread made me fire up the It Better End Soon Suite from...

...Chicago II

That group lost part of their soul when Terry Kath died.

Hopefully you're not linking Look Away to Peter Cetera's voice as he'd already left the group by then.

My favorite album.

And for the record, Peter Cetera was THE voice of Chicago.

Peter Cetera is THE voice of the one-dimensional Chicago. wink

One of the assets of the original band was their trio of lead singers (Robert Lamm, Terry Kath & Peter Cetera).
It made the songs more interesting aurally and from an arrangement point of view as 3 distinct voices could be used within a single song.

Speaking of Peter Cetera, since he refuses to even discuss Chicago last I heard, what's gonna happen if the group gets inducted into the RRHOF?
That could make a very entertaining Chicago-reunion RRHOF dinner table if he decides to show up for the pub.

I noticed Peter left after 17. david foster left after 18 (which even I admit was pretty bad in places). I like 19 alot though. I knew "tunred away" had to be diane warren. But how did u know? That album has no songwriting credits?

I assume "21" bombed then? Shame, some really nice tracks on there.

Did any other member do any MOR stuff like Peter? I'd be happy to know?

hey theaudience, I guess u were like my dad and didn't buy anything after 17? My dad didn't. I played him some of their later stuff, he wern't diggin' it.

Like jefferson airplane, chicago are a great example of how music changed alot between 70's and 80's. Thanx to many member changes of course.

I got a Starship album and grace ain't even on it!. Infact, I think only 1 member was still on that record. It dropped in 1989 I think? "the burn" was a reasonable hit my dad said.

Don't worry about Chicago getting in the R&R HOF, Peter will be there!!! wink

But I think that there is still some beef between Peter & Chicago because of the way they were promoted during the MTV golden years.

And it didn't help that Warner Brother Records wanted the band to stick with the 80's pop ballards that were working so well (BTW, Peter was the only Chicago member that agree with WB on that formula). neutral
