hey,

I don't know about you guys, but looking back through all the cd's I have bought over the past 12 years...I notice that my interests in certain genres or artists seems to develop in the same patern...I'll buy one cd from a certain artist and when I like what I hear, I'll be buying nothing but that genre for months...then I'll discover someone else and the 'tide' shifts again. Looking back I can pinpoint my preferences in music to only a handfull of albums. So, what albums dramatically changed your musical horizons?

mine:

1. David Bowie - Hours:
the first album I bought by david Bowie, started my love for classic rock music. Soon after I was listening to everything from the velvet underground to the doors to Kiss. Also the album that made me realize there was music beyond the charts.

2. Jeff Buckley - Grace.
I wasn't aware of him during the hype, and I only picked this album up quite a while after he had passed away. But this album was a path to the music of not only jeff but also Dylan, Crosby, Stills, Nash,...

3. Prince - The gold experience
My first Prince CD remains one of my favorites. I can only wonder what would have happened if I had picked up 'grafitti bridge' first. Anyway through prince's music I discovered a complete genre of music I wasn't familiar with: Funk. He got me hooked on sly, george, rick...and so many others.

4. Marilyn Manson - Mechanical animals.
actually I picked up the dope-show single first. This was at a kinda chaotic time in my life and his music was just what I needed. I don't want to sound like a walking cliché here, but his music did have an impact on my life and the way I look at the world. this cd introduced me to NIN, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Iron maiden,...

5. Willie Nelson - greatest hits.
Got this from a friend by accident...for those who
read one post by me on this board...this CD goes without Saying

6. DR John - N'Awlinz - Dis, Dat or D'udda
bought this a couple of months ago. It was my introduction to the blues. a genre I'm growing more and more fond of. Soon Stevie Ray vaughan, Clapton, Muddy waters and JL Hooker followed.

7. Prince - the rainbow children.
My introduction to Jazz. I know the album itself isn't one of the greatest Jazz-albums around but it started my interest in the genre. I'm listening to sketches of spain right now,...I wouldn't be if it hadn't been for TRC.

Fleetwood Mac's Tusk. I was about 8 when I first listened to it, and it made me realize that most modern stuff sucked a$$ and that I needed to focus on older music.

Parliament - 20th Centry Collection

discovered a "WHOLE NEW WORLD..." of funk other than Prince.
Leading me in2 James Brown, Bootsy Collins and opening my ears to many many other funk classics.

Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
I never knew this kinda strange qwirky suburban type music would sway my head under for about 18 months. I discovered the Beatles and found Lenny Kravitz and Jimi Hendrix during my preppy college time.

Daft Punk - Discovery
If I never heard this album my daze in2 French dance/funk/pop wouldve never existed. listening to this at my job one night, blew my head off.
I discovered a better dance group "Basement Jaxx" in the progress...which also inspired my crazy whacky cartoon beats.

Prince - Diamonds & Pearls
I tell U if Push, Walk Dont Walk and Diamonds & pearls would'nt have been on this record I wouldve never found Sheila, The Time, Jill Jones, Vanity6 and even leading up to an interest in funk jazz music (Madhouse).

D'angelo - Voodoo
I'm not sure if I would've payed much attention to Nu Soul acts if it just wasnt for me buying the album just to hear "Untitled" leading me in2 Meshell Ndegeochello, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu.

After years of grundge, shitty midtempo rnb and rap I was into, I rediscovered and picked this up again.

"my love is good enough" blew up my speakers with the newjack flavoured pop. Then pop pure, simple, well written, addictive pop is next with the summer jam "wannagirl". U got al b sure! written slowjams too. And the best pop song never remembered "the right kinda love". It got me back into glenn, joey, NKOTB. Away with nirvana, away with the beatles. This album opened my eyes that kiddie pop with a teenybopper cover could still be good. Respect.
