I always imagine Bjork pulling a little wooden cart on
strange looking wheels up a mountain behind her by a
thick rope she's flung over her shoulder.

In the cart, charlene sits, mixing soda's with ice in
thick iced glasses.

At every bend in the road, Bjork stops to listen to her
little transistor radio and scan the frequencies for a
message from anyone that could offer directions.

She and Charlene have a drink and then move further.

I know what the song was about originally, but that was
only until after I made this image in my mind. I like
this image better. Charlene's doing fine again. She may
be dead but she's still there, mixing drinks

Uhm, where to begin? It's a poem Ginsberg wrote
and later on he asked McCartney if he knew of a
young guitarplayer who might want to contribute
some playing to it.

McCartney offered to do it himself and spent a
lot of work on it. They rehearsed it together
and even performed it in England once.

After McCartney was finished with is, Philip
Glass contributed some more sounds and piano
to it.

I believe that Gus van Sant directed a video
for it later on which was even played a lot
by an alternative show on MTV (back in those
very early days when MTV was still cool).

But I'm not completely sure if van Sant did
the video for "Ballad of the Skeletons" or
another song/poem. I'd have to check since I
read that somehwere in Ginsberg's collected
interviews "Spontaneous Mind".

It appears on an album of Ginsberg readings and
songs that I got from a friend a long time ago.

I'll upload it to yousendit and post the link in

That's awesome. I love your descriptions. biggrin

I always liked to pretend the song was about PJ Harvey. They were hanging out a lot at that time and are still friends to this day. The description of Charlene in her dress that's "red and oh so slippery" seems a perfect fit for PJ's "Down By The Water" look at that time. Plus, Clarlene sounds an awful lot like Polly Jean, doesn't it? In reverse, I always though that PJ's "Yuri G" was about Bjork.

But now I'm curious, what IS the real meaning of "Charlene"?

Well, the real meaning of Charlene is not known. It was released
in 1995 and inspired by Kadamba Simmons.

It wasn't until later that the song got a darker meaning when Kadamba
was murdered in 1998 by an ex-boyfriend. She also used to date Bjork
friend and producer Nelle Hooper, which is how Björk got to know her.
