James Carr "the dark end of the street"

I have no idea who he is, but my dad keeps playing this track and I think its pretty good and sad.

Anyone know who he is? I gather he is a soul singer of the 60's like otis reading? My dad said he only has that single.

That song is a soul classic. Recorded at the storied Fame Sutdios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and written by Chips Moman and Dan Penn, two of soul music's greatest composers/producers (Moman was the man behind the board during many great Stax sessions). The Dark end of the Street is the definitive cheating song, IMO.

Way to school 'em Stax. thumbs up!

Slip Away (Clarence Carter), another Muscle Shoals production, might give it The Dark End of the Street a run for its money for the Cheating title. wink

THANX GUYS. glad someone knows of him. Iam surprised more dont as that song anyway is really good.

I just watched the soul thing on bbc2 this morning (it was on last night and my did taped it for us). They mention james carr (ttoday was about southern soul like stax etc.....)

James seemed to of been seen as a clone of otis reading. He was self destructive, and despite his fine voice, he became addicted to booze and drugs and was always lonely after fame came his way. He fucked himself up pretty much. Shame.
