Miles Davis: A Different Kind of Blue DVD...Carlos Santana "Betty Mabry Davis makes Madonna Look like Donny Osmond" I recently watched the documentary, Miles Davis: A Different Kind of Blue which chronicles Miles' transition to fusion and I found a few of Carlos Santana's statements very interesting. Santana was one of the many musicians interviewed on his thoughts about Miles Davis and he stated that Betty Mabry Davis http://www.musthear.com/r...davis.html , Miles former wife, introduced Miles to Hendrix and Sly's music and convinced him to go into fusion or "to plug in". Santana described Betty Davis as a strong "beautiful Black Panther" that would not or could not be controlled by anyone. She had nearly no audience as a funk/soul singer and had an edgy persona that was the same on and off stage. In other words, she was that way when the cameras were not around. I found Carlos Santana's statement about her making Madonna look like Donny Osmand very interesting because he saw Davis as more authentic and not as much as an image driven artist designed to appeal to the masses.
Santana made some other interesting comments about Miles Davis being a legend because he was not afraid to take chances and take risks that most musicians would have avoided. He stated that unlike Michael Jackson and Sammy Davis Jr., "Miles wouldn't tap dance for anyone". Santana sees MJ and Sammy Davis as entertainers and Miles as a musician (something that is echoed daily on this site). He respected Miles' singular vision and his ability to go against the grain despite the risks to his critical/commercial/corporate success. The documentary is interspread with fascinating perspecitives from various lengendary musicians. Joni Mitchell makes a dead on statement about pop music conditioning listeners with the same four notes and how when new notes are introduced, listeners do not know how to react. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone that wants a brief history lesson about Miles' transition. Furthermore it closes with a 38min live performance of Davis' legendary set at the Isle of Wight. Yes Ndeed!! I grabbed that DVD a few months back, It's Great!! I'm glad that his Electric stuff is Finally getting the attention it deserves; Now I hope they release more footage of his early concerts with those Bands, from '68 to '75.....
