Sam Cooke In the UK there is a series called 'Soul Deep' which looks at Soul Music and a few weeks back the special focused on Sam Cooke.
I've got a few Sam Cooke compilation CDs/Tapes and his music was great for it's time. Songs like 'You Send Me' and the awesome 'A Change Is Gonna Come' still remain classics to this day. I was wondering if anyone else likes Sam Cooke's music and how much influence do you think he has on modern soul/R&B music today.

Sam cooke was an original member of "the soul stirrers" a gospel group, sam was really good friends also with the "Valentino brothers" which Bobby womack was the lead singer.
Sam was also very good friends with Lou rawls. if you listen to "Bring it on home to me" Lou is singin with Sam. Sam was also the first black man in the music industry to own his own Label "Sar Records" which had a few artists, and to find original 45's on Sar. you'd pay out the ass for em. sadly sam was shot and Killed in a Hotel Room.

Absolutely! Funny,I was just listening to the compilation I have called Sam Cooke: The Man and His Music on RCA. Lots of good music, including some gospel. Hey, he was FINE, too! Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

There's a 4 CD boxset available which looks good. Is there a compilation of his songs with The Soul Stirrers?. I'm in the UK so Sam Cooke CDs are not readily available here.

Sam Cooke sung alot of standards like 'Danny Boy' etc. and was wondering what everyone thinks of that. Also do you think early Smokey Robinson and The Miracles has overtones of Sam because I personally think alot of early Smokey sounds reminiscent of Sam Cooke.

The greatest voice ever. Funny you should mention him, I have been thinking about writing a dramatic play based on his live, filled with his music. It would be a blast. There will never be a voice like his.
A few of my favorites. Tennesse Walttz Frankie and Johnnie Red Rooster Ain't That Good News Jessus gave Her Water Amazing Grace A Cousin of Mine Sugar Dumpling You guys will get a good laugh out of this, R Kelly's voice reminds me of Sams a bit, not in the same league mind you but, he has good vocal ad libs like Sam. 1 over Jordan...the greatest since

Otis worshiped Cooke, so you know Sam was influential. Aside from his talent, Sam was also a hell of a businessman; one of the first African American artists to own his own music publishing company, management firm and publishing company. A true groundbreaker. As I recall, he was also a charter inductee to the RRHOF. They need to make a movie (at least a VH1 TV movie).
