This just goes to show you that Bono is a populist fool.

& now that you bring Pop up
I realize they didn't do any songs from that cd.
Now I feel bummed.

They've been saying this for a while now, but I don't think it'll ever happen. Remember that Bono is the king of hyperbole.

Anyway, I don't understand the Pop haters; I think the album is every bit as good as All That You Can't... It's not one of their masterpieces, but it's only got two stinkers (Miami, Playboy Mansion), and that's the same ratio as ATYCLB (New York, Grace). Some of my favorite U2 songs come from that era, especially Please and Do You Feel Loved. I'd be highly upset with a rerecording of the album, although I'm sure I'd buy it anyway.

If they wanna rework a weak album, they should reconsider their most recent one. Pop was a great album, and it still is.

larry mullen has been saying this for years. supposedly they booked the tour before they even finished the record and the band feels like it just wasn't finished. i have to admit i liked the new versions of "gone" and "discotheque" more than the originals but i hated the new version of "staring at the sun" and "numb"!

that three record era...achtung baby, zooropa, and pop...is still my favorite. those records could have been one large boxed set, they just go so well together! atyclb is a great record but its very "u2 by the numbers" and has very little to offer that hasn't been offered before. i'm not knocking that - there's nothing wrong with a band perfecting its sound and sticking with it. i just think that those three records were very exciting because it was a time when you didn't know what to expect. that's why i like the new record so much...it has moments that make me say, "wow! i wasn't expecting that!"

Don't knock "Miami" (or the town, for that matter). It's a great song. Seriously. wink

I don't mind the new versions on the greatest hits records (to me, they're like remixes, and its better than paying for the same versions I already have), but I definitely don't see the point of redoing the entire album. Fine for a retrospective, just don't re-do the whole thing.

If they MUST do a re-recording, it should be something that they offer on their website only. Personally, I love the Pop album. It was way ahead of its time.

Hold up. You're a big Coldplay fan, but you don't like U2?

Their albums Zooropa and Pop made me a fan, and I felt like they regressed after that. Maybe they want to erase all of their evolution completely.

I'm done with U2.

Why's that? I think it's hard to mess with them musically. Politics, ego, grandstanding, etc., sure.

But I think their music is far from a joke.

didn't they already do this, basically, when they re-recorded the songs for singles, remixed them for best-of's, etc.....

not every song on the record was a single therefore not every song on the record was remixed. the songs that were remixed were proper remixes, not remakes.

Please and If God Will Send His Angels were re-recorded (the former, completely, the latter substantially). If You Wear That Velvet Dress was also re-recorded by Bono (and Jules Holland?) around the time they were doing the best-of remixes.

Practically every song on it has been re-shaped, post-album release, by the band. So what's the point in re-recording it?

Practically every song on it has been re-shaped, post-album release, by the band. So what's the point in re-recording it?

perhaps there were songs that didn't make it onto the record the first time around and they'd like to re-record the record including some of these tracks and excluding some of the other tracks. perhaps the remixes they made didn't capture a cohesive spirit or sound. maybe they wanted to work with other musicians on the record and they weren't available at the time. who knows what their point is? maybe they prefer the idea of having all the "remixes" on one record rather than scattered about via various side projects and singles. your inferences are being drawn based on assumptions, though, and those assumptions are things that - unless you are friends with the band - you can't possibly know.

ok. so you don't think there's a point to re-recording...that's wonderful for you. the creaters of the work, however, still feel as though they can tweak the album into something they consider finished. what's the point in questioning it. you'll either buy it or you won't buy it. no biggie.

it's finished. they need to stop obssessing over this one piece of their catalog that is never going to be the perfect blockbuster that all of their other work has been.

and yes, of course that's my assumption. this is the internet in 2005. we've all been doing this such a very long time. i didn't realize that we still had to label things "IMHO" and such.
