Wonder's album put back
24/05/2005 - 08:16:17 Soul star Stevie Wonder's 28th album has been delayed again, amid suspicions studio bosses don't think it's good enough. The blind star has returned to the studio in Los Angeles to rework A Time 2 Love, which was given a rescheduled 14 June release, and now there's no timing on when the album will hit record shelves. The album features a duet between Wonder and his daughter Aisha and is said to weave new technology with the piano man's vintage soul sound. | |

Shame on them.
Time for Stevie to roll out and get a new label or exit the freeway via the same route as NPG. It would be nice if they had a label (A good label) for what people call "old school" R and B artists. Rock groups, Country artists and some Jazz acts are offered the chance to record for their entire careers. (We all love The Stones but when was the last really great and relevent CD they made?) Everyone should have the same chance. LA Reid and Beyonce's dad can't cut it on running that kind of label. Soon they'll be getting Patti LaBelle to record a duet with Kelly Rowland or getting Gerald Levert to feature The Black Eye Peas on a track. UH uh, no dice. stevie needs to speak to prince about some sort of arrangement with npg. this is sickening. its stevie wonder. stevie freakin' wonder. get the songs on adult urban radio and adult contemporary radio, advertise the record, and get it on shelves. he doesn't need to have a number one record. who cares. advertise to his market, promote to his market, and lets get on with this. he'll do oprah, ellen, good morning america, etc. this is crazy! | |

I mean,let's be honest...we all know this album isn't gonna sell like 'SITKOL'.There are very few longtime artists who still sell alot of records these days.Motown needs to be realistic and lower their sales expectations a little.It's not necessary for this CD to sell ten million copies. | |

Stevie should go to Sanctuary Urban Records.This is a record label for Old school R&B artists.Beyonce's father is in charge of the urban division,and so far,the label has signed The Ojays,Earth Wind and Fire,etc. and they're planning to release the new Rick James CD. With a big in-store display with Elton wearing a big heart on his butt. From what industry insiders are saying Matthew is dropping the ball at Sanctuary. We don't another need 1996 era Andre Harrell. I don't think it's such a big deal just yet. Maybe the album really does just suck.
If it turns out Stevie makes the album better, I'm fine with it. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I'll reserve judgement until I know what the actual cause of the delay is (who knows for sure whether this is Stevie's or Motown's choice). However... if it is Motown's decision, I never thought I'd see the day when this once-amazing record label decided to hold back one its' most biggest and influential artists based on record sales. Screw that - he could sell 5 copies of this album and they shouldn't give a damn. He's earned his place. AND kept that that record company running. I wonder how the current management would have treated SITKOL?? "Too long, Stevie! Edit that!". Shameful. | |

Jermaine Dupri has recently been named head of Virgin's new Urban division, and many of their artists are being re-classified under that header. | |

Wasn't there a specific quote from Prince a few years ago about the absurdity of telling Stevie Wonder that his music just wasn't cutting it and to go back into the studio? I can't remember which interview it was. Chris Rock maybe? | |

I for one would love to see Stevie high in charts. I'd like him to capture the teen audience, not by selling out to rappers ofcourse, but an album with radio-friendly material would be great. kids need to be educated | |

The single is out now in the UK.
That seems to suggest an album will follow, at least in Europe. In my (somewhat limited experience) UK listeners are not as concerned with superstar producers-of-the-moment such as the Neptunes and Kanye West, so perhaps we will get it here. Hopefully, then US listeners can import it. It really is a sad state of affairs though isn't it? It probably will not be until Stevie dies now that the Record Companies will give him decent promotion. Look at Ray Charles and Barry White ... . Disgusting really. | |
