I though his cover of mercy was good. But I dug palmer's slick 80's period(Clues rules!).Not as much as the classic 70's material though...Both mercy and early in the morning were top 20 hits.

What really made his 70's stuff cool was that it was more raw and less commericial. "Doctor, Doctor. Give The News. I Got A Bad Case Of Lovin You." [Edited 5/23/05 21:58pm]

Both are great but I think I surprisingly like Palmer's very cold verison (although I think my favorite track by him is the snappy "Simply Irrestiable"). I just heard it the other day. The intro of Palmer's seals the deal. Both are pretty different but very good.

A man singing those lyrics gives them an entirely different meaning. [] I dont believe a man gonna turn down a woman unless she look like Wanda (haaaayy). And if a man did turn down a woman he sure wouldnt tell it to her face, he would just not call. Cherelle and Mariah are more believeable. This tune is definitley a woman's track. Just as Aretha singing respect instead of the person it was originally given to. GOODDD I wish i had that video again. Cherelle trapped in a apartment and King Kong comes out and snatches her in the air. Havent seen it since I was like 5 or 6. I bet the video fit the music perfectly. I was thinking about the gender issue when listening to it but Palmer is very mechnical (or at least his vocals are) in the song. There is no lust there like in some of his other tracks. I never remember seeing the Cherelle video...or any of her videos!

As anyone mentioend this new release which probably flew under the radar. It's finally a domestic release of Cherelle's "Greatest Hits" (I think a "Best of...." was a available but only as an import and is now out of print). It comes out this week. Guess the rereleaes of two of her CDs was not in vain.

That'd be the guy who wrote it and also recorded it first... ...Otis Redding. Respect also works from the male perspective. ya'll trippin' with that Palmer stuff... Cherrelle vocals has more soul. Whereas, Palmer's version is basically carried more so by the instrumental accompanyment more so than vocals because he has the members of Chic on the rhythm section.

Yeah, but that ain't a bad thing! Don't get me wrong, I prefer Cherrelle's, but there ain't a thing wrong with Mr. Palmer's version.

I actually prefer Robert Palmer's version. In fact, I thought the song was a run-of-the-mill Jam & Lewis tossoff until I heard Robert's version, which made me like the song a lot more.

Whether you like him or not, calling him a joke is a bit of a stretch. The man made a significant contribution to pop music in the 70s and 80s.

He had somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 pop hits from the late 70s until his death a couple of years ago - Bad Case of Loving You, Can We Still Be Friends, Addicted to Love, and my favorite 1978's Every Kinda People among others. Yeah, I wasn't a fan of his remake of Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming either nor was I a huge fan of his take on Mercy Mercy Me, but he had a genuine appreciation for reggae and soul music. And then there was Power Station - the Chic/Duran Duran/Robert Palmer outfit - a concept some love and others love to hate. The album yielded two big hits, Some Like It Hot and their cover of T-Rex's Get It On (Bang a Gong).

Robert Palmer is not a joke His version of Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin not good as Jermaine & Michael's, and his remake of I Didnt Mean To Turn You On was coo..but not as exciting as Cherelle's version...but that doesnt make him a joke of an artist. Now Some people dont like the funk too much (Cherelles version) so they perfer Robert's relaxed mellow, not bad..but doesnt make me dance and it's not as energetic. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Nuff Said. Her version is better because it's more uptempo, funkier and is the first one to come out. No doubt Robert has his legacy as a singer, but this didn't help him much at the time IMO. This post has been modified from its original thought. It has been formatted to fit into the space and run in the time allotted.

There's no competition. The Cherelle version kicks ass.For some reason,I think it was more suitable for a woman to be singing those lyrics.
