"I didn't mean to turn you on" Cherrelle or Robert Palmer Played both cuts back to back, gotta admit I like Robert Palmer versions more. Opinion please.

The Cherelle version is superior
I like Robert Palmer (R.I.P) but it was funny the way he kept "stealing" then-current R&B jams and having his own hit records with them.Remember when he covered The System's "You Are In My System" not too long after their ownversion was released? [Edited 5/23/05 4:59am]

Cherrelle, all the way.

Love them both almost equally. I give a slight edge to Cherrelle's version, if only for that kick ass Minneapolis sound in it. But I love the production in Palmer's version a lot, too.

This song is so hot I love all the versions, Cherrelle's, Robert's and Mariah's. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Mariah's is good, because it's just a copy of the original. I love hers until she does that silly-ass "duh duh duh duh dooooo dooo, duh duh duh duh dooooo dooo" at the end.

I Didn't Mean to Turn You On was his best attempt in the R&B cover category. Still, Cherrelle wins hands down. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Cherrelle's version was more cutting edge (courtesy of Jam/Lewis of course). But believe it or not, Robert Palmer's cover version gave th song's lyrics a whole new meaning as a typical ladies man. Robert Palmer wins!

Robert Palmer wins! While I gave the edge to Cherrelle's version, that is precisely why I love Palmer's version. A man singing those lyrics gives them an entirely different meaning. When I took you out I knew what you were all about But when I did I didn't mean to turn you on Now I bring you home You told me goodnight's not enough for you I'm sorry baby I didn't mean to turn you on No, I didn't mean to turn you on You read me wrong I wasn't trying to lead you on Not like you think I didn't mean to turn you on I know you Were expecting a one night stand When I refused I knew you wouldn't understand I told you twice I was only trying to be nice Only trying to be nice Ooh, I didn't mean to turn you on Babe now why should I Feel guilty 'cause I won't give Guilty 'cause I won't give in I didn't mean to turn you on Ooh, I didn't mean to turn you on When I took you out Iknew what you were all about But when I did I didn't mean to turn you on No, I didn't mean to turn you on I didn't mean to turn you on....

please! Cherrelle's version is better. Not just the singing. Actually I like Palmer's singing, he sounds so ultra smooth! But it is the music! The true Minnie sound is way better than that flat Hollywood copycat music.

Cherrelle--the seven minute version. The second half of the extended version is when the song really kicks into overdrive.

a mediocre song, even though it sounds like 1999 I go with Cherrelle [Edited 5/23/05 8:45am]

Cherrie's version is tighter but Palmer did completely pimp it. No one plays the clarinet the way U play my heart

Robert Cherelle did'nt sing it as good as Mariah, BUT Cherelle's version goes on for 7 minutes of raw uncut 1984 FFFFFUUUUUNNNNNKKKKK that cannot be denied. Those synths, drums & cymbals going through the left and right channels are mindblowing. i still get chills when the climax comes on and Jimmy & terry takes over just screamin "I Didnt Mean To Turn You On!! / AAAAA didnt mean to turn you on!!!" Mariah's version on the other hand was excellent too. When i mish-mashed both versions together I noticed Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis turned up the bass on Mariah's version and added a little poppy synth in the beginning of her version as well...I think only I notice it though Robert Palmer version is nice. Mellow and more for the pop crowds whom eh em, cannot handle the funk. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

[] I dont believe a man gonna turn down a woman unless she look like Wanda (haaaayy). And if a man did turn down a woman he sure wouldnt tell it to her face, he would just not call. Cherelle and Mariah are more believeable. This tune is definitley a woman's track. Just as Aretha singing respect instead of the person it was originally given to. GOODDD I wish i had that video again. Cherelle trapped in a apartment and King Kong comes out and snatches her in the air. Havent seen it since I was like 5 or 6. I bet the video fit the music perfectly. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

After listening to both these tunes again, my opinion has split.
While I still prefer Cherrelle's vocal performance, i'm now partial to Robert Palmer's music track. Probably the Edwards/Thompson groove. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
