MTV Africa

Did anyone watch the launch of MTV Base Africa tonight?

Nelson Mandela was on the special along with Will Smith, Ludacris and a slew of local African artists from all over the continent (South Africa, Nigeria, etc.) Seun Kuti, the son of Fela Kuti, also appeared on the show tonight. It's very eye-opening seeing African artists perform live. I'm interested in checking out their CDs. I hope MTV Africa features local talent and isn't just a vehicle to further promote sh*te American mainstream music. Since it's Africa, I hope they don't just pump a bunch of 50 Cent and Ludacris videos. That would be wack.

Your thoughts?

I saw the commercials for this and it did look very promising. It even seemed like Will and Luda were there cuz they had an interest in seeing this become a success rather than for their own personal advancement. Of course, I could change my mind about that once I actually see the show. To tell the truth though, I was surprised Africa didn't have MTV already. I thought they had made sure they saturated every market imagineable.

Well, now with MTV Base Africa, they finally have.

I somewhat welcome MTV Africa because it's a sign that the continent is coming into the First World more, but then again, it's yet another sign of American corporatization abroad. Like McDonald's.

I thought the show was cool. It was nice to see Will Smith performing. The crowd seemed to be really into the whole thing. I like Will's new cd. I don't care what anyone says I think he's a great role model for African American's. I'll take him over Fiddy anyday.

I liked seeing the African artists as well. I wouldn't mind hearing some of their music. So when is this show going to launch? Anyone know?

Oh, I'm not "hating" on Will at all. I really think he is a cool guy and a prime example of a "good black man." The guy is smart. He takes care of his kids, charming, has a great personality and makes a great model for youth out there. I love seeing the relationship he and Jada share, it's wonderful to look up to. I want a relationship as solid and giving as that. If you ask me, they are the ultimate Hollywood power couple (bigger than Brad & Jen, Ben & Jen, etc.) They will last together. They're like Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee to me. biggrin

I think MTV Base Africa has already launched though. Folks in America were treated to the channel's inauguration.

Very well said. I agree! It's too bad people don't give him enough credit or respect since he's not a gangsta. sad

Yeah Switch is hot! I love most of the songs off the new album. It's a fun hip hop cd. It's nice to see someone in hip hop who doesn't take them selves too seriously.

Ok, I just saw the video on Launch. I think it's just a cool little club/party song.

Hope he's not using ghostwriters. You know Nas coached him on his rhyming for the Big Willy Style LP.

eek Whoa, missed it. Not a big MTV fan.
Wonder if they'll be repeating it?
I dig Fela and am curious about Seun's music.

It could be a good thing if the focus is centered around African/World artists.
The last thing that country needs is to become a petri dish for breeding 50, Lil Jon & Cash Money Millionaire clones.

Thanks for the info.

Not sure if they'll be reairing it on the main channel (but then again, this IS the same network that'll rerun Real World 80 times a weekend). It might come on MTV2 sometime in the not-to-distant future. I'd check MTV.com airdates if I were you. It was a cool special.

I thought special was nice because it did show case various africa artist as well as each artist talking about the type of music they do. We always put the continent of africa in one grouping so it was interesting to hear them talk about the various musical style from each country.

I wish i could watch it on the regular....

Ditto. MTV should make a channel called "MTV Global" and focus on one continent or country per day or week -- "Africa Wednesdays," "Europe Fridays," "Brasil Weekend" biggrin

nod TA, you brought up a great point. MTV Africa needs to focus on more indignous artist such as Fela, Youssou N Dour, Angelique Kidgo just to name a few. I watched the special and I was very dissapointed at what I saw but at the same time this is what I expected from MTV.

They did have some local talent on there. But it seemed like the local talent was too busy trying to "hippity hop" along with the American rappers that participated in the concert. One group hooked up with Luda, etc.

nod I saw those groups. But, I was referred to more indignous artists who are less Hip-Hop Oriented like Fela, Youssou, and Angelique. Those groups sucked ass big time trying to sound like the Fugees.
