Bowie Survivor Okay, so a few of us have been planning this for quite awhile. But I wanna get a few of the specifics straightened out first. I've never done/started one of these before, so I'm new to this. And with his career, there might need to be a few exceptions made.
1. Which album should we start with? I know a lot of Bowie fans can't be bothered with anything before Hunky Dory. Would that be a good opener, or are y'all gonna feel like we're grossly missing out on the first couple? 2. Should we incorporate the bonus tracks from the Rykodiscs or 30th anniversary editions? Or at least some of the more significant songs like "John, I'm Only Dancing" and "All the Young Dudes". I know I think of them belonging in such a competition. 3. What should we do about the patchier 80's period? He was more of a singles artist then and throwing in stuff like "Under Pressure" and "Absolute Beginners" would probably make those rounds a lot more interesting. And worth doing at all. 4. Anx, care to be my collaborator in this? I know it was as much your idea and I'm a bit afraid to take it on myself. 5. Any suggestions? This could be really cool and fun. Let me know what you guys think, mkay?

1. I don't know anything before Space Oddity, but we should at least start with TMWSTW. No need to leave that out.
2. Yep! 3. Don't know about the albums after Let's Dance (up to BTWN, of course) as I have no intention to ever listen to them, but those singles should be in! 4. Uh, can't answer for him, unfortunately! 5.

1. No those early albums have gems and highlight his singer/songwriting abilities.
2. No 3. 80's Bowie was dope 4. 5. Earthling, Scary Monsters, Let's Dance (yea I said it, i like this album )

space oddity the man who sold the world hunky dory i'm sure it'll just turn into hunky dory survivor, but it's a thought. and a damn geeky thought, if i do say so myself.

Would that be a good opener, or are y'all gonna feel like we're grossly missing out on the first couple? start with 1969. or even '67. there's no point in doing something half-assed 2. give the bonus tracks their own rounds. perhaps divide it into 3 chunks... 69-80, 81-91, 92-05. 3. What should we do about the patchier 80's period? He was more of a singles artist then and throwing in stuff like "Under Pressure" and "Absolute Beginners" would probably make those rounds a lot more interesting. And worth doing at all.
see above. "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."

scratch my last comment.
i say start with space oddity and go through each album. no bonus tracks. as originally released. then, after all that's done and if we're still alive, then maybe do a ryko/virgin bonus track survivor thread - if there are even enough people who HAVE the ryko versions or who have actually familiarized themselves with the bonus discs on the newest reissues - but hey, i'm game.

Yeah, I'm just really fond of a lot of those bonus tracks. But it'll make it easier (and quicker) to leave them out for now. I just figured that most people who would be familiar enough with the albums and want to vote are probably fanatics like myself and know EVERYTHING.

So I see a trend.
1. Start with Space Oddity 2. No bonus tracks mixed in 3. Bonus tracks get their own round(s) I can go with that.

False starts be damned. I think I'll pass. How 'bout The Feathers? well, 'love you till tuesday' has got some good stuff on it, ya know. 'when i'm five' is, in my opinion, one of uncle dayvid's most overlooked oldie moldies.

i love me some pre-Space Oddity bowie... especially let me sleep beside you.
But realistically, probably best to start w/ Space Oddity, as that is where most people begin their Bowie exploration.

Just pick one dammit!
I'll vote if it actually gets underway. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven
