I don't think he does try to sound like Prince at all. He's definately been influenced by him though. The one song where you can really hear that is "Debra" off of "Midnight Vultures".
His new album is great, but if you're new to the whole Beck thing, then Midnight Vultures and Odelay are the best two to start with. Sea Change is also an amazing album.

Try the Midnight Vultures album, it's probably his most Prince-like album. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

the whole 'midnite vultures' album sounds like a love letter to prince in my opinion...some of the liner note art even reminds me a little of 'dirty mind'. it's not my favorite beck album, but it's fun.

You need somebody like me to point your fingers at and say, "Hey, Look at that platinum album selling smooth criminal!"

if P this year delivers a CD half as original, cretaive and ambitious as Becks new CD i'll be astounded. Yes Beck does go back to his old production values and sound he still manages to take it forward. Unlike Musicology which went back and stayed back!!.
