TLC - No Scrubs (1999)

What do you think of this song today?

Is it played out to you or do you still like it?

I think it's still cool. I remember radio and MTV wore this song out back when it premiered, but I wasn't all over radio so I wasn't phased.

This song takes me back to the days when I used to be a cheerleader. touched

It's catchy, but at what point does it stop being a song and just bcomes a hook looped 123,435,456,756,456,568,453,769,786,567 times? It really drags.

The end on the album version is pretty repetitive, but I prefer the Left Eye rap/video version.

Played out. I never ever play it because MTV and radio overplayed it at the time. I don't feel nostalgia for it.. those Shek'spere beats sounded dated about 1 year later. (ie. Destiny's Child second album barf).

Play somethin off their debut or second record and I'd be alright though.

Now I can't think of any track I like from TLC's Fan Mail.

Only the non-album Don't Look Any Further remix of "Unpretty".

Yep. I could just dump their album and keep the "Unpretty" CD single with the remix on it.

I'm at work right now, otherwise I'd share it.

I actually liked alot - I see how you could say that though - it was alot of dead ballads. 'Scrubs' wasn't my favorite but 'Silly Ho" was the shit- give it another chance

Fanmail as a whole didn't live up to their previous efforts, but you had some decent cuts on there like the title track and "I'm Good At Being Bad" (the structure of this track is very Janet "What About"). After "Dear Lie," the album's pretty much bools**t.

No Scrubs was (and still is) a hip-hop/R&B classic!

But the album FanMail was a hit and miss IMHO. CrazySexyCool was the best TLC album ever.

It sounds too much like 2pac's Hit'em Up.

BTW, I'm so sick of the Don't Look Any Further samples.

I didn't care for this song - ever. I thought the subject matter was a waste of lyrics and I thought that it promoted black male bashing in a time when we needed it leaset. I also thought this type of song is what drives a wedge between black women and men and promotes the destruction of the black family structure. Hypnosis is always done with simple catchy suggestions rather than long complicated instructions. I detest songs like this and DC's "Soldier" for that very reason. Its counterproductive and they seep into peoples' everyday mindsets. You have to beat a DJ's ass to get him to play Angie Stone's "Black Brother", but they'll spin bullshit like this and "soldier" a million times. TLC was ghetto, so they had ghetto lyrics. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. I thought this was one of their bad moments. Musically, the song was okay. Kind of a return to the early 90s synth music without sounding dated. I liked the music on the track "Good At Being Bad", but again - dumb lyrics. At least they had "Unpretty" to redeem themselves with on that CD. Scrubs was a dumb ass song, though.

for real! i mean dude i feel what ur sayin..and if it had've been pointed out that they was talkin stictly about brothas i would totally agree..but they don't point that out..i think its just a dude bashing song..period..black has nothing 2 do w/ it..now soldier is a whole nother story and thread entirely!

I never understood why that verison wasn't on the album. It was a lot better. I think some radio stations edited it/played the album verison....back when stations were not hip hop friendly...how the times have changed! The rap verison was much better. Great beat and arrangement. Great singing, although, it's notable (if memory serves) that some other girl did a lot of the backgrounds and I don't think T-Boz actually was on this track at all....check the liner notes.

In No Scrubs defense, I think you're twisting the song way out of context and spinning it on something totally far-reaching. Not all women fall into the category of "if you don't have any cheddar, don't holla at me," but this song specifically addresses those women who are tired of running into (and constantly dealing with) men who don't take care of their responsibilities -- whether that be providing for themselves financially ("have no car and you're walkin'" or riding shotgun in "his best friend's ride") or just an overall lack of self-sufficiency ("live at home with ya mama").

In American society, regardless of how un-P.C. this might sound, men (on average) are expected to be the breadwinners and the providers. That's what makes a "man." So are women supposed to accept non-self-sufficient men, who as Chili said, "have a shorty that [they] don't show love [to]"? Just to spare their feelings? That's continuing the cycle of child neglect. If anything, Chili's just hoping that dudes would take some responsibility in themselves. Do for you and you'll be rewarded.

If you apply this aforementioned view, then the song as a whole is just calling on women to empower themselves and expect the same in their mate, meaning they are out looking for self-sufficient men which, in turn, promotes a healthy male/female heterosexual dynamic. That goes for "deadbeat women", too -- hence, "No Pigeons"*! Plus, it's not just limited to black heterosexuals -- this message transcends orientation and ethnicity.

These types of songs have existed for generations. Would you draw this same fervor for a track like "Hit The Road Jack" by Ray Charles? In it, the woman is thoroughly through with the man.

Now Baby, listen Baby, don't you treat me this-a way
'Cause I'll be back on my feet some day,
Don't care if you do, cause it's understood,
You got no money, and you just ain't no good
Well I guess if you say so
I'll have to pack my things and go (that's right)

Essentially, TLC's No Scrubs tackles the same concept and updates it for a hip hop generation.

Not gonna speak on "Solider" because I dislike that song and that group.
